Possibly the best handheld console of all time

Created: 18/06/10
Most people have heard of the Nintendo DS Lite - with its evolution from the original DS it has become one of the best portable games consoles available.

Released in 2006 its versatility has made it popular with all ages. From kids playing Mario Kart to pensioners playing Brain Training and Suduko.

The 2.9 Inch screens are very clear - the bottom screen is the touch screen and the top screen is a normal screen. There is a touch screen stylus stored and accessable from the right hand side of the console. The console has built in wireless capability and if someone else has another DS you can open the "picto chat" software built into the console and create a chat room. Then you can type chat or write messages that are sent wirelessly to each other (kids will find it great fun sending each other silly messages). You can also link up and play against each other in compatible games. Also it can connect to the internet for certain games (compatible wireless router or wireless adapter required).

It also has a built in microphone which some games use and has a stereo headphone socket to save you disturbing everyone in the room!

The wide variety of games and accessories available for the console are what make it great for me. Some of the accessories include:

Guitar Hero Grip - for Guitar Hero and Band Hero games - I find these great fun and are good for a break from "regular" games.

Ds lite Browser Pack - this is a cartridge and memory expansion that will let you browse the internet on your DS!

Also the library of games available is very impressive from simple classic games like Scrabble, Monopoly and Battleships to great action games like Mario Kart and Pinball. It will also play the older Gameboy Advance games (they plug in the front). So you dont have to bin your older games.

It would be hard for someone NOT to like the DS as it is so appealing and you are bound to find something you like. You can even get Language Tutors and 100 Classic Books to read on it.

With the vast selection of colours available too - my advice is pick your favourite colour and buy one!

Also a quick note on "fake ds consoles" - there is no such thing. What you will find is some consoles from the Far East (normally sold with a selection of Gameboy advance games) are refurbished units. Refurbs will have had the cases changed to new cases (so they look shiney and brand new) and the cases wont be the same quality as the original Nintendo case - so may feel cheaper and / or be more fragile. They wont have any of the original serial codes, markings etc either. They may also have a cheaper third party power adapter - like all cheaper power adapter these can be dangerous if they fail or short. So just be aware of what you are buying - nothing necessarily wrong with them so long as they work but just be aware that what is inside the case might not be brand new.

Thanks for reading!

DS Lite + Pokémon SoulSilver

Created: 26/08/10
I already own a DS Lite with Pokémon HeartGold, and I purchased this for a friend so that she and I could play together (there's no way she could afford one on her own right now). That in itself should be testament to how good I think the DS Lite is.

To cut a long story short, the DS Lite is fantastic. Within the first couple of weeks I already owned 7 games for it, all of which I love. Prior to this I owned a PSP for around 3 years, and whilst it was a nice media player, I probably only managed to find 7 games that I genuinely loved throughout its entire lifespan. Maybe that says something about my taste in games, but I think it says more about the console; whilst the DS is a bona fide handheld console that you can pick up and play anywhere, anytime, for from 5 minutes to several hours, the PSP simply didn't fit that model, and felt more like a scaled down home console, and as such it required the same level of attention to enjoy the games, stunting its ability to perform as a portable. For fun, the DS is way ahead of the PSP, but do note that the DS does not have media playback functionality as standard, so if that's what you're looking for then the DS isn't for you.

With regards to Pokémon SoulSilver, if you have even a passing interest in Pokémon and you own a DS, buy it. SoulSilver and its counterpart, HeartGold, are remakes of Pokémon Silver and Gold respectively, games that ran on the original Gameboy (with enhancements for the Gameboy Color). Aside from the obvious graphical updates in the remakes, they offer some nice new gameplay elements, including use of the touch-screen to navigate menus and control battles. So far I have put around 8 hours into HeartGold and I am only at the second of eight Johto gyms, not to mention the 8 Kanto gyms that you get to play once you complete the Johto region, or attempting to complete the Pokédex (which now requires you to catch 100 supplemental Pokémon on top of the original 150), or the online aspects of the game (oh yes, I forgot to mention - you can both battle and trade Pokémon over WiFi) so I am expecting literally several tens of hours of gameplay still to come. With that in mind, even if you purchased a brand-new retail copy of HeartGold/SoulSilver for the standard price of £35, it is phenomenally good value for money, especially when compared to the gameplay length of many modern console games. The newly added Pokéwalker is shockingly entertaining too, and that's coming from a 20 year old who has now been walking several times over the last couple of days with the sole purpose of levelling up Pokémon and collecting 'watts' (I don't really have time or space to properly review the Pokéwalker, but a quick Google search will lead you to it - suffice to say, it is really quite good fun).

To summarise, Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver are some of the best games available for the DS at this point in time, and anyone, from those looking for a bit of nostalgia, to young kids who adore Pokémon, to people who just enjoy RPGs and are looking for a new challenge, will find that these Pokémon games more than fit the bill.

If you don't own a DS yet and have been waiting for a killer game to sway you to purchase one - this is it.

a very simple and low powered psp

very good product.
easy to use, the screen is very small if you are used to a PSP, but the type of games are different too, funny, but not so graphically interesting. But there are very worthy games for this console, give it a shot, you will have fun! And the battery lasts way more than a psp battery even thou it has 2 screens!

Incredible value for money console and games

This is an absolutely fabulous game console for the money with a varied selection of 150 games that satisfy the whole family. The games alone bought separately would cost hundreds and hundreds of pounds.
Quality and playability exactly as would expect from Nintendo but the cost is what lured me to this particular seller. Arrived from China after only 1 week, well packaged. Games are on disc that you then transfer over to micro SD Card (included) that has an adapter cartridge for the DS console. This means all the games are on a drop down menu when you switch the console on and saves switching cartridges. Perfect!!
