The Nintendo DS lite has been around for several years now, yet it has held it's second-hand value very steadily as these are still very very popular today, despite the release of the newer DSi and DSi XL.
Small, lightweight, and with huge support of games for any age these are popular with children and adults alike.
A second-hand unit can be purchased for an average of £40.00 - £60.00, but there are some things to check first when buying used consoles.

1) Touch screens are easily damaged. Make sure the unit does not need a replacement touchscreen, although these can be purchased for less than £5.00 if a confident person wants to replace one.

2) Hinges are easily damaged. Make sure that the unit opens and closes ok, and will support itself in the open position. Look for cracks or missing plastic around the right hand side hinge. These were VERY common to breaking.

3) Make sure it plays games reliably. Children have often inserted the stylus pencil into the game slot causing damage to the pins. Bent pins will not read games or may cause intermittant issues!

4) Screen damage. Top and bottom screens can be damaged by people snapping shut the unit whilst the stylus is lying across the screen. Dead pixels on the top or bottom screens, or dead spots on the touch screen, show evidence of this.

5) Cosmetic damage. Main issues are dirt working into the top and bottom casings, as these have a clear perspex trim which dirt can become sandwiched inbetween. Can only be cleaned by completely stripping the unit down (Not easy!)
Also, the top covers have a laquer coating over the coloured plastic, which is often scratched or worn through. Red models in-particular suffer from this.

6) Dropped units often do not turn on, and sellers sell thinking that the unit simply requires a new battery or charger. Be aware of this as it more-than-likely requires internal attention by a technician. L2 and L4 inductors often break from the circuit board upon shock.

Overall, a fantastic games console for all ages, that gurantees to provide the user with value for money. Buy one, use it for a year, sell it, and you'll never be at a loss!

This little handheld console is light, durable, and highly practicle due to it's slim size. Fab for entertaining the kids on long journeys. I love the wide range of games you can get for it; from pokemon, to brain training. I find it great that you can link up and play with other consoles.
The screen is bright and clear and the menu is very easy to navigate. There is also a function that allows you to talk to other DSs in close range, that's fun too.
I had my own black one for about two years, but it got lost so I was looking to buy a used one.
Overall, a brilliant product for any gamer, at any age. :o)

It was five years of watching my friends and family buy a DS then to flip out over the DS Lite, then to become annoyed that the DSi was just announced with bonuses different to the usual scale changed and buttons re-mapped. Of course, there were a few who got that only to hear of the DS XL then the 3DS which actually is supposed to be the first step for the Eighth Generation.

What did I choose to do? I got the console named the "DS Phat" in retrospect by it's fans and bided my time, somewhat jealous of the brighter screen and smaller scale of the Lite. I had seen and played the other SKUs over that time and picked the DS Lite as it was the best value for money option and had a bright screen.

It is smaller, sleeker, has a DS mark on it's back, brought the mic upwards to the centre, it also uses the same firmware and presentation which never needs updating as the "DS Phat", it plays GBA games unlike the DSi (XL)... My only dislikes would be the power button being exposed, more likely to be accidentally flicked though it hasn't happened yet.

If you wanted a DS for yourself, your child or your friend. The DS Lite is the best choice, it can play all of the GBA games, every DS game in existance (while the DSi's lack of a GBA slot means Guitar Hero DS is out of the question) and has a bright screen at a low price. The DSi's bonuses are many but can be handwaved when you consider all of the GBA games that you lose even with the interesting DSiWare.

Portable, versatile, rechargable, handheld game console. Kids of all ages enjoy sitting down to play, and as any parent knows there are times when you really need something to keep them quiet. Too old for games yourself? Try the cartridge containing 100 classic novels. Smaller than a paperback, you can carry this with you and always have a library available in your handbag / jacket. Ideal for waiting rooms, long train journeys etc. Just one small negative: The battery always seems to be running low just as it gets interesting ...
