Nintendo's consoles usually are not in the peak of technology, but they deliver a lot of fun and this one was no exception. At it's time, it had to compete with color screen handhelds (Gamegear, Lynx) or handhelds with bigger screen (Supervision) but it came out victorious. Judgind by today's standards, there are calculators in the market with similar screen analysis, it only shows some shades of green and the sound, though the speaker is adequately loud for most situations and there is an option to use headphones as well, is somewhat primitive. Game sprites, in most cases, give the impression that they could be sketched by a 12-year old boy and, though you can adjust the contrast of the screen, it's not playable in heavy sunlight situations. On the plus side, it is really lightweight and 4 AA batteries will keep it playing for many hours (and there is also the option to plug it to a wall socket with a 6V converter when at home).
Speaking about its games, let's take a typical example: Super Mario Land.Technically it's as simple as it gets: mountains (or are they pyramids?) made by a single triangle, trees made by 1 straight and 4 curved lines, most sprites look like they have less than 5 frames of animation, some nice midi tunes and the usual bangs and booms. To make things worse, it is a small game. Yet, it is fun (in the classic platform jumping - shooting way, you probably won't like it if you like your games more complicated), and that's what is most important, so after starting playing I don't care about the technical shortcomings. I have to mention also that the game cartridges can be found at about GBP 5-10, which is maybe a little expensive by today's standards for what they deliver.
Speaking of what they deliver, most of it's games provide very simple gameplay, which was more than enough back then but today it may not be enough for some players. So there are puzzles like tetris, platformers in which you jump, shoot and avoid getting hit by enemies, 2D shooters (R-type and alikes), beat-em-ups etc.
The one million dollar question: is it worth buying (for a looooooot less than a million)? Well, it depends. If you are a collector, you most probably should want to have the first handheld, as we know them today. I have passed my childhood with one of those, so it brought some nice memories and I'm currently looking to buy the games I was playing back then. Most people should consider buying a Game Boy Advance at the same price (it offers backwards compatibility along with it's native games, it comes with a better screen and sound, it's even more lightweight, but also outdated by today's standards) or, even better, a modern PS vita or 3DS if they can afford it.
To sum it up, the first handheld console's shine have worn by age, but it still delivers some fun, in the old-fashioned way!

Why I bought it? Because it's one of the most adorable and memorable items, from the 8-bit era, in the whole universe and from my childhood also. I love Game Boy because of its simplicity and simultaneously its unique shape, specifications and robustness. This green spinach screen, might be very annoying and obsolete nowadays, but I don't forget that in this screen I first met Mario, Mortal Kombat fighters, Zelda, Kirby and many many other characters. I used to have a Game Boy seventeen years ago which 5 years later I gave it for a SNES. How fool of me!!Now,twelve years later, I own again one of the most recognized items in the world. Game Boy is in our hearts and will stay forever.Nothing can be compared with the value of a Game Boy.
I already have two Game Gears and a Game Boy but, I think I should buy another Game Boy in the future.

i thought it was pretty good value for money. I look forward to buying more games for it. My big sis had one in the 1990's and she loved it. It was better than having real friends, that is what she said anyway. When she found out I had bought one she said I owe it to her because when I was 3 years old I chucked it in a bath of water, She cried for months but she still didn't make friends.
Having tried it for myself I have decided to keep it and get her another one on ebay.
