I recently bought one of these off eBay for a total cost of around £35. At the time, most of the others were a minimum of £40, with no games included. Mines came with 4 free games, Kickle Cubicle, Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, Turbo Racing, and Kick off. Kickle Cubicle was a great puzzle game, which I played all the way through, and really got me into the world of NES. TMHT was a good action game, which unfortunately receives negative reviews by the critics. The game actually kept me entertained, until it occasionally froze halfway through the game. Turbo Racing was OK, at first I didn't understand how to play, but I later found out about changing gears. It never seemed to entertain me though, and I couldn't be bothered to play it. Kick off, what an awful game, one of the worst I've ever played, but this didn't put me off the NES, it just got me to stick with the classics. At first, I was experiencing the infamous flashing light problem, though I found ways around it, so it wasn't much of a big deal. For such an old console, it had great performance, and good condition. I've purchased two games for it so far, Super Mario Bros. 3, and The Legend of Zelda (2 classic NES games). In my childhood, I played the GBA version of the game, and so I already knew how much of a great game it was. As soon as I popped this great game in my NES, I was sucked into its great game play, and took me only about 5 minutes to get to world 8 (handy warp whistles). It took me a further hour to get to the end of world 8, stacking up on lives, so I don't end up starting the world again. In under half an hour, I beat the last boss, and completed it for the first time. Of course, afterwards I played through all worlds, just to get the full experience of the game, well worth playing. I only just bought Zelda, so it hasn't arrived yet, unfortunately. Can't wait to play more classics of this great console.

Without doubt the NES is my favourite console of all time, having owned mine since i was about 10 i have never had any problems with it and it still works perfectly (20 years on).
The selection of games was always good and is even better now as you can pick some classics up for just a few pounds on ebay.
The only thing these console did suffer was dirt on the connectors, which are easily replaceable with just a philips screwdriver, and the connectors can be purchased for around 6 - 8 pounds.
The NES can easily be modified to play US & European games, opening up hundreds of games to you which never got released in the uk.
If you do try out a NES some games you must try are :
Super Mario Bros 1 2 & 3,
Kickle Cubicle,
Kirbys Adventure,
Zelda 1 & 2,
Tetris & Dr Mario.
An excellent retro console that i really recommend

Have bought one of these for my brother because he has been surfing quite regularly looking for one,saw a boxed 4 pad system that was barely used and grabbed it for his birthday -though it was quite expensive. Have played all 5 games and the graphics we were all amazed at in the '80s are expectedly poor, however prepare to be bored in 5 minutes by the gameplay. Sadly the world has moved on too far. I would recommend you save your cash and go for a gamecube, N64 or Sega Dreamcast. They seem to be cheaper by a long way, and the money you save can go into buying a bundle with many more games, or controllers.
However if all you want to do is impress guests, then a TV with a NES sitting infront of it does start some great conversations of the early days of home gaming, and the delight on peoples faces when they have a five minute blast is quite nice, though they will slate everything about it:
"My God its slow"
"How square are these controllers"
"Look at those graphics!"
Conclusion: An excellent decorative piece for the home, stating you are an intelligent and thoughtful person who clearly remembers the best of the 80's. An absolutely rubbish retro console.

The NES will never replace the ps2 ps3 wii blah blah blah box....and niether should it. It is a different proposition.
The NES is still selling after 25 years. I'll be interested to see how the ps3 is selling in 2037 haha, my guess is this legend of the gaming world will have the upper hand.
Zelda, Mario, Metal Gear, these three titles alone give the NES the status it deserves, the birth of modern gaming, and far far more then a museum piece, these carts still give the same pleasure they did all those years ago, and, in my eyes, are a welcome relief from the "I want to take over your life" games of today.
A console and a game collection to rival any in history, the humble NES.

I bought the NES as I was quite excited to re-live some of my youth, However I have learned a valuable lesson, To the sum of £60!!! These consoles are difficult to start due to a fault which seems to appear with most NES versions. I must clarify that this was not by any means the sellers fault. My excitement clouded my judgement lol!

I would advise all people in my position to stay clear of the old NES versions and keep the memories of playing the 1st Mario games as just that! Maybe there is a way that I could get the fault repaired but this is something that I am yet to look into.
