Great choice for a capable film camera.

Created: 24/02/11
The OM-10 is a fantastic way to get into film photography, either as a student at college or as someone like me who's fed up with the blown highlights and endless messing about with digital SLRs.

The OM-10 shares the features of it's professional-standard brother the OM-2n but in a lighter partly-plastic casing. They're very robust and not much goes wrong with them.
You'll need to invest a fiver in a new set of light seals because even the youngest OM-0 will now be about thrity years old, and the old seals will have perished. They're an easy DIY job though, so should present no problems to the competent amateur.
The camera works as standard in "Aperture Priority" automatic, which means that you select the aperture you want by turning the ring on the lens and the camera decides on a speed and sets it.
It's worth buying one with the optional manual adaptor if you have the choice. This adaptor is a black plastic rotary switch which clips onto the front face of the camera and allows you to have full manual control over the shutter speed. The adaptor alone sells for about £10, so if you can find a body with one already on it's a great buy.

It will take the complete range of the excellent and readily available Olympus Zuiko manual focus OM fit lenses, and usually comes as it left the factory with the great all-round 50mm F/1.8 as standard.

There are loads to choose from on Ebay, and you'll struggle to spend more than £50 on a mint one with a lens. About £10-30 for a body alone.

Heartily recommended.

I already had one Olympus OM-10 and have just bought my second. The first is still in perfect working order, but It's just such a brilliant camera I wanted to buy another - also so I could loan one to a friend (simply for enlightenment purposes) and still have one to use, and take it places without worrying.
It's very easy to use and can produce some really beautiful images with great clarity. I have numerous film cameras I pick up at Car boot sales etc, but this camera exceeds them all.
It is also more handy to carry than other larger film SLR's, i've used more advanced and newer film SLRs but this still remains my favourite. It's also sturdy and not liable to break any time soon.

A delight in use, solid entry to use Olympus lens. Manual adapter is a must

This was mi first camera 30 years ago and has a aditional valor for me.
PROS: Compact, light weight, a first entry for reputed Olympus lens, aperture priority, meter allows long shutter speeds.
CONS: Requires manual adapter for select shutter speed, very poor designed face other models (OM-20...). Change the ASA selector can move without noticing the lever for B/manual.

Yes, it's ok. Small, light and with decent enough lenses. However, it really is a camera for the complete beginner. If you must have an aperture priority only SLR (and as far as I'm concerned, it is AE only - the so-called manual adaptor is a pain to use) the Nikon EM is far superior.
Alternatively, why not buy something that 'grows' as you do - AE plus the opportunity to experiment with 'Manual'. Then the choice is almost limitless. How about a Minolta X300 (better and cheaper lenses), a Nikon FG (better and more expensive lenses), or a Pentax P30? The latter two will allow you to use your lenses on your DSLR too.
Or, think outside the box - a Yashica FR-1, perhaps a Chinon Memotron...? If you really must have an Olympus, an OM40.
Personally, if I didn't have a DSLR it would be a Minolta X500 or XD7. If I did, and wanted lens interchangability, it would be a Nikon FE (if I could afford one!).
You can guess which of the above I have and use. The camera in the car, 'just in case', is a Cosina (another review due..)

I am very happy with my camera, and the lens kit! It is really nice and I hope I can take good photos for my coursework and for my hobby! Having the remote plunger is a good addition too! As well as the lens tissues! Very good seller!
