I got this specific model because a friend was using one and getting good shots in situations where my much bigger (and older) camera was failing. I've been using it for a few weeks, mostly out of doors, and have had good results.

Even on maximum zoom the picture seems to come out sharp, with plenty of detail. I find things in the picture which I didn't notice at the time - its a bit like going back to the scene and looking again through binoculars.

The battery seems to last, and taking it out to recharge it does not mean you have to reset the clock. Charging is reasonably fast, but a spare battery would be useful sometimes.

The camera fits fairly well into a pocket, but gets a bit bulky once in a protective case (bought separately). However, I feel the case is necessary when scrambling around in the countryside.

I fitted an 8 gig SD memory card, just because I had one handy. 120 pictures at high resolution took up about 10% of it, so a card with 2 gig or so would be quite enough for most people. Using the supplied USB lead made a simple connection to my computer where the camera appeared as an external drive. Copying files was quick enough, although if I'd filled the memory it would have taken a while! Another (supplied) lead connects to AV devices using the same socket on the camera - note that this is not a USB socket even though it looks like one! Another lead is available to connect direct to some Panasonic televisions. I didn't have the lead, but the television had an SD socket in the back, so I was able to show off my pictures at the end of each day.

I have not explored the various modes of operation yet, as I have been getting good results using the automatic mode. The only poor results I got was once when it focussed on background grass rather than the foreground branch I was interested in, and a second time when I tried to get close up on maximum zoom, when it failed to focus. I'll read the handbook and see how to avoid those problems in future.

The viewing screen (there is no viewfinder) is usually good enough to frame up a picture, and you can switch off all the icons if they are getting in your way. The main problem I have with it is when facing into bright sunshine. Then the only thing I can see is a reflection of my face. I suppose that could be fixed if I carried an old fashioned photographers black cloth to drape over my head in order to see the view - going back a hundred years!

I have only used the video function by accident, and the results looked quite good - but the subject was boring!

When I bought this camera it was not the latest model, but I knew it would do what I needed. Compared to my previous one, it is several generations more advanced. It's hard to imagine needing any higher resolution, and for general use it is fine.

The panasonic ZS8 is the same model as the TZ18, but was manufactured for the North Amercian market. The camera is easy to use and the menus are self explanatory. You can use the intelligent auto for point and shoot or chose from the wide array of menus to fine tune to your own needs. The zoom is an added bonus. The battery is long lasting. On the whole this camera can take excellent, clear and colourful photos in the intelligent auto mode, but not always. It is best to take two or three shots of your favourite views. I found that landscapes are often over exposed and need to be altered by a photo programme on the computer. Moreover, telescopic shots are not always clear. Nevertheless, I would still recommend this camera if you want a great zoom but don't want to carry a bulky bridge camera or DSLR camera.

Really pleased with the camera. It is easy to use with the intelligent photo setting but also allows you to set shutter speed, exposure etc yourself. The zoom is outstanding and the display screen is clear with good definition.

Review for: Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ18/DMC-ZS8 14.1 MP Digital Camera - Black
Overall an excellent camera - it has a satisfying sound to let you know that a picture has been taken. For a compact, the shutter delay is almost non-existent which means you dont have the agonising wait from the time you press the shutter to the time it actually responds!

For me, this is a convenience camera when one can't be bothered to lug around the Nikon DSLR and, as such, it is excellent. If I'm picky, then the exposure control is challenged when there are big contrasts and it will always over-expose. That said, the convenience is first-class, the lens is great and, once one has mastered the zoom, it is really versatile. The movie mode is good too.

Review for: Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ18/DMC-ZS8 14.1 MP Digital Camera - Black
Very impressive camera - iv used many different cameras and this is one if not the best compact on the market ! if you want s**t hot pictures but something more easy to carry than a bulky SLR this is the camera for you ! would recommend it to anyone !
Also i spent alot of time comparing it to the Nikon (of simialr spec) and this wins due to the manual input you have with the camera - if you want to get creative its good fun or if you just want to point and click it is more than capable in all situations!
