    Product Information
The PENTAX Optio50 is a compact, lightweight digital camera that makes digital photography easy for virtually anyone. Incorporating a handy "Simple" mode, it allows the user to quickly choose an icon that matches the subject at hand and have the camera select all the optimal settings automatically for the best possible results. And to ensure easy use continues no matter where you go, the Optio50 has also been designed to be powered by AA batteries, which are widely available internationally. But to be worthy of the PENTAX name, of course, ease of use is simply not enough. Indeed, the Optio50 offers the power and clarity of a 3X optical zoom lens and the sheer detail and high-level resolution of 5.0 effective megapixels, making it as sharp at shooting as it is easy to use.

    Excellent Results (eventually)!

I bought an Optio 50 on ebay for a price I couldn't resist. "It's a Pentax - it must be good!" I thought.

My first photos were taken on a night out with friends and the results were disappointing. Half of the photos were out of focus. I decided to read the instruction book and made a startling discovery: You should wait for the focus marks to go green before pressing the shutter all the way! Needless to say the next batch were in focus.

My main interest is landscape photography and I have to say this camera has produced my best ever results in this field! The colours and sharpness are great.

The only downside is that at the shortest zoom length there is some slightly noticeable "barrel distortion", but you get that with most compacts in this price range. I am still delighted with the photos I have produced on this very compact camera, though.

I do recommend rechargeable batteries of at least 2000mAh to get the best battery life from this camera. You won't be disappointed.

Good little compact heavy on batteries.

    Created: 05/07/08
I bought my Pentax Optio 50 a couple of years ago for about £100. Its very compact and light and takes good photos. You can choose the quality depending on what you want the photos for. I only use a few of the features, and the menu is a bit fiddly to negotiate. You can date imprint your photos, which is good for holiday snaps, but if you crop them prior to printing you can easily cut off the date. It takes and SD card, which you will needed as the internal memory is small. You can't do anything without the lens extending, and I think this is probably why it is heavy on batteries. If I am at home I use NiMH, but even these don't last for more than a few shots, so when I am on holiday I use Duracell, but this is costly and they still don't last that long. If it wasn't for the battery problem I would have rated this camera as excellent.

    Perfect for begginers

It's a decent camera. Picture quality good and it does do the job without any problems. The only downsize is the AA batteries which go after approx 60 pictures when using the flash and probably 100 pictures without the flash.

    Chunky but functional

    Created: 11/09/08
When viewing the pictures taken the lens does not retract which increases the risk of lens damage. Chunky little camera but lightweight. All in all quite reasonable value as a first digital camera or for a teenager.

As long as you're not looking for anything particularly flashy, this little camera is a good budget choice.
