Great quality DAB Radio, but missing a few features

Created: 04/12/08
This RD-59 radio is excellent for lightweight/portable DAB reception due to it's diminutive dimensions and economical power consumption.

However, considering this is meant to be a portable radio I have 3 (admittedly fairly minor) gripes :

1. It could have done with being supplied with a protective carry-case (especially as the finish of the case is quite shiny !).

2. A small pull-out stand at the back so it can be seated at an angle securely would have been handy (when sat on any uneven surface it has a tendency to fall over very easily).

3. Most importantly, there is no carry-strap nor even a facility for one to be fitted.

Even my cheapo 'normal' portable radios have those features !

Having said that, it works great with 4 x high-capacity rechargeable Ni-MH AA cells (with a minimum rating of 2200mAh I'd say ), only requiring them to be changed after many hours of use.

The built-in speaker provides a good reproduction quality, the aerial is 'meaty'/can be extended to some 67cm and there are station presets (5 per band) as well as a 'scrollable' station selector (which shows any secondary stations and can also can be set to auto-select the displayed channel after a few seconds pause).

The 2-line LCD is auto-illuminated and allows for DAB broadcast information to be 'scrolled' below the station information, as well as a range of other (selectable) data to be permanently shown, including the date/time (which is set automatically).

The FM radio side is fine and has RDS.

So, all-in-all a good purchase with few competitors of comparable quality.

The Gemini 59 is very small & light. Great reception with 10 station presets - 5 FM & 5 DAB which are easy to access by direct buttons. You can get 20 - 25 hours use out of 4 AA rechargeable batteries. There is a lock switch which disables all buttons while the radio is being transported so that it cannot come on by itself / by accident. It is available in both black & white versions. It has a very clear 2 line 16 character orange display. It has all the features you would expect of any DAB radio & of Roberts in particular. I paid £50 for my black version - and have nothing bad to say about it. I have owned 4 Roberts radios in the last few years and all have been of outstanding quality & reliability.

Roberts RD59 FM/RDS Radio

having previously bought through ebay a roberts 15 radio, I bought this one for my daughters. On testing the radio I found it to be very poorly made and sounded "tinny". The radio came with a charger which bacame hot after a few hours of use. The radio tune buttons were very small and anyone with larger fingers would find it difficult to tune, although there is a auto tune button. I would recommend to anyone wishing to purchase a Roberst radio DAB to saty well clear of this radio and insteadbuy the Roberts 15.....You have been warned!!

ROBERTS DAB RADIO RD59

I NEEDED TO REPLACE A FAULTY DAB RADIO AND THE ROBERTS RD59 LOOKED LIKE A GOOD BUY AT SOME £30 (INCLUDING P/P). IT'S A GOOD LOOKING RADIO WITH GOOD SOUND QUALITY. THE ONLY FAULT IS THE ABCENCE OF A CARRYING HANDLE. AT THE PRICE IT'S AN EXCELLENT BUY.

What a fantastic sound from a small radio. Easy to use & a joy to listen to - it exceeded my expectations in every way. Great portable radio that does exactly what it says on Roberts website.
