Alcatraz is the star
Alcatraz, once famous for housing American Soldiers as a prison camp is brought back to life by this action movie The Rock.
Tourists are visiting Alcatraz when a group of US Marines lead by Ed Harris travelling with the tourists seizes control of the Island and holds America to ransom. The ransom is for recognition and payment for lives lost in a war and no compensation went to the families of the lost loved ones. If the ransom is not met, then Ed Harris and his platoon will launch chemical weapons at San Francisco.
Meanwhile, Nicolas Cage (FBI agent) who is a chemical weapons expert who works in an office all day, becomes a field agent and has to infiltrate Alcatraz to try and disarm the missiles.
The US Government and US Military try to think of ways of getting onto Alcatraz without Ed Harris' platoon knowing this and the only way of getting onto a remote Island without being noticed is by the underground pipework, which is situated under water.
They know that there is only one man who has survived escaping from Alcatraz and still alive today but he is still a federal prisoner. So, the US Government visit the federal prisoner who is played by Sean Connery and is ex-Special Air Service.
The US Government offer Sean Connery a full pardon if he helps the Government to gain access to Alcatraz.
The stage is now set: Both Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery set-off for Alcatraz with a platoon of US Marines to over-through Ed Harris and to try and disarm the missies.
This is a great movie with action through-out with good characters played by Ed Harris, Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery.
The only negatives I found in this movie, was how easy the chemical weapons facility was comprimised by Ed Harris for him to steal them and that if this did happen in a real-world situation. The US Military wouldn't send US Marines into this kind of situation. They would actually send in Navy SEALS.
Overall, a great movie with lots of action.
Welcome To Alcatraz
The Rock is one of the best action films around. The action scenes are fast-paced and exciting, and the plot (even though it just links the action scenes together) is intelligent and thought provoking. It involves a former marine commander who is angry about the US government refusing to pay out retributions to the families of marines on secret ops. He eventually takes the step of kidnapping tourists on Alcatraz island and threatening San Fransisco with poison gas. Although the Commander is threatrening to kill millions of people, it is easy to see his point of view, and understand his motivation. To get rid of this, the government sends in a chemical weapons man (Nicolas Cage) and an escaped prisoner of the island (Sean Connery). Although most of the action scenes are all about gunplay (which is very well done) there is also a brilliant car chase towards the beginning of the film when Connery (in a Humvee) tries to escape from Cage (in a Ferrari Testarossa).
Overall, this film is fantastic, and was well inside the top 50 of FHM's top 50 bloke's films.

The film is classic action but with a political and moral twist. Sure its fast fetched and corny like all action films with pretty much one guy, well two, saving the day,,, And what I like about it that the bad guys, on both sides - Ed Harris and Sean Connery are really both good guys.... The music score is class as well, Producer Jerry Bruckheimer employing his favourite Hans Zimmer for the job.... (Nearly to the standard of Crimson Tide).
Do buy the 2 disc version. The one disc is an early two sided which halfway through has to flipped, right in the middle of the best scene (Showerblock Ambush) of the film....I brought this to replace my one disc...
The Rock DVD
Have always enjoyed films that have Nicolas cage in and I think Sean Connery is a brilliant scottish actor. The scenes are really good and the acting is first class. I decided to buy this on dvd as I already had it on video and am updating all my films to dvd.
Blu Ray DVD - Excellent Picture & Sound
I have always liked The Rock as I feel it is the best film Michael Bay made until Transformers was released in 2007. It is loud, colourful and fast moving throughout, with good performances from all of the cast, especially the three principal leads (Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage and Ed Harris). So, I was looking forward to purchasing the American Blu Ray version, which incidentally will play on Region A or B Blu Ray players, and I wasn't disappointed! The sound and picture are both terrific, and with a full compliment of extras, this Blu Ray DVD is a must buy.
