Fabulous. Magical 'Child In Time' Concept Album.

Created: 12/11/10
I bought this album after I had come across the single 'Love Is All' by Roger Glover and Guests. I was anticipating something in the 'Purple' vein, but discovered a wonderful 'Beatles/McCartney-esque' tune with Cornet solo (a la Penny Lane).

Conceived, written, and directed by Roger Glover of Deep Purple fame, this is brilliant stuff. Indeed, the Purple connection is strong on the album with some excellent performances - Dio turns in one of his best ever performances on 'Sitting in a Dream', David Coverdale sings on 'Behind the Smile', Glenn Hughes on 'Get Ready' and Roger Glover plays throughout. However, this is no 'Smoke On The Water'or 'Burn'.

The album is in fact a concept album of 20 short songs which flow together perfectly on the themes of love, peace and understanding and is based around some forest animals who are trying to work out a way that they can all live together. It culminates in them all getting it together at the Butterfly Ball and Grasshopper Feast to celebrate their cultures and diversity. It may sound hippie or dated, but the music certainly isn't dated and shouldn't be compared with contemporary concept albums.

Beautiful haunting music telling a story with distinctive, entertaining characters. You really feel you've been to the Butterfly Ball. This is quality stuff!

The Butterfly Ball , A slightly biased review.

Created: 04/12/07
Roger Glover drew together an eclectic mix of singer , writers and musicians to set to music Alan Aldridge's book, The Butterfly Ball, and in doing so produced an album of music, both excellent, and ahead of its time. The fact that the album has been re-issuesd on many occaisions speaks for the basic quality its material, and of course that once heard, its title track will hang around in your brian for days , popping up at the slightest oppotunity to do so!!
The list of musicians is formidible, the talent likewise, i would suggest you look up the details yourself , after all isn't that what Google is for ? , and try to find at least an MP3 of the title song , if your not of an age when you can remember it the first time around.
For me , the best way of describing the pure pleasure from this, "Concept Album" is simply that my 13 year old daughter will play it , and try to learn the lyrics from the songs.. not bad for an album from 1974 !
So all I can say to sum up is...
" Love is all , Love is all you need , at the Butterfly Ball!"

So try and find it ,listen to it , perhaps buy it, but above all enjoy it for what it is , an extrodinary collection of talent, perfoming some wonderfull songs, songs that have a habit of staying with you for a long time!
