Roots - The Complete Series (DVD)
ROOTS DVD box set
I remember this on TV in the 1970s and it was compulsive viewing back then.
Now in 2011 some if not all of the series has racist undertones that are very overt and some covert.
Some may be offended by this but the story is about the freedom of the many held and forced to work by the few who were rich enough to enslave them.
Today this series can not be made in the format it was made back then and i can recommend this DVD box set and it will make you laugh and then cry and all the other emotions in between.
The story is compelling from the outset and goes through the generations and i feel you can still see the struggle even today.
Great Britain abolished slaves a full 80 years before the Americas did hence the civil war and then was born the United States of America where freedom was enshrined in the Constitution.
Many will remember the series and many will never have seen the series but to the ones who have and have not this story simply does not end when the series has been seen but the struggle is still alive today as some of the same attitudes back then are still held by the few to control the many.
I do not recommend this DVD for small children though due to some violence and the language used but for that....A recommended DVD box set worth having.
Please note that on Ebay you can buy the box set with the free EXTRA DVD called "the Gift" and its the same price as the box set without it...so ensure the DVD box set you buy has the extra DVD film called "the gift" as this was never on TV and will not cost any extra .

Roots probably did more for black integration in TV drama than any other series. I was totally hooked when it first came on TV, and subsequently bought Alex Haley's book. The story covers one man's family tree from the early days of slavery in the US right up to the mid-20th century, from the brutality of the slave owners to the eventual emancipation of the Afro-Americans. Lots of social history, and lots of fun, sadness and pathos. Be prepared to sit on the edge of the settee with a large box of tissues beside you.
Why don't they ever put this on TV? Years ago, many excellent series were made for TV which have not dated, and would be fresh for the new generation, and would be so enjoyable to see again. Time for series like Roots to be taken out, dusted off and shown again, for the edification and enjoyment of all.
I love this series. Top class acting, direction, sets, locations etc. etc. Go for it. You won't regret it.

Roots-The Complete Series (dvd )
Brillient story, tells you of how life use to be like for the coloured people and how they was abused because of the colour of there skin, not only adults but children too. Some parts are sure to make you cry. Thank goodness things have changed now adays, and things will inprove more, we are all human no matter what colour we are.
Bought this dvd because we watch it when the series was on tv in the 80's and has it was never shown again would have liked to see it again and told my grown up children about it and they wanted to se it too.
Roots - The Complete Series
I saw this series of Roots many years ago on TV. It is true to life. I have never seen the Next Generations DVD so i am looking forward to seeing it. I would like to see it again as a series back on TV. Many people would have an insight as what it might have been like in those days.
A series that pulled no punches...

Iconic mini series as told by author Alex Haley as he decided to research his family tree and came across his roots in Africa, to his families years as slaves in the deep South through to present day. An all star cast depicts the story splendidly... One of the best mini series ever!
