Galaxy Tab - Should you get one or not?

Created: 25/01/11
Review for: Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 16GB, Wi-Fi + 3G (Unlocked), 7in - Black
Let's keep this first bit clinical and of course this is only my opinion as a user.

Size: Absolutely perfect size, 3x iPhone, 1/2 iPad, it really is the best of both worlds. Not quite pocketable but still small enough to pop in and out of a bag easily.

Feel: When its naked you can really feel the quality of the build, it feels incredibly solid to the touch. Can also be quite slippery as it is so smooth and glossy on both sides.

Screen: Well this is key part of the Tab, with a netbook resolution and a high dpi, everything looks really crisp and clear, the colours are bold and bright and the 7" widescreen is fantastic as a book, cinema screen or picture frame. Really great viewing angles as well, side by side on the bus no problem. The front is a single glass piece so no edges or joins to catch on. It really is a dirt magnet though, you can't really tell when the screen is on, but when dark you can really see them. A little reflective as well, bright overhead lights can make the screen impossible to see.

Battery: Actually really impressive, as it is basically a phone it sits in standby when not in use so it's always just there waiting and I get at least a full days use out of a charge when being extra tough on it.

Extras: The standard set of accessories are, well, standard, dock to usb cable, usb wall plug and in-ear headphones with mic (these are actually the ones that you push inside your brain instead of the usual just sit in my ear type and come with a selection of different cap sizes to fit most brains) and as you would expect from Samsung they are all of a very high quality.

APPS: If you've never tried an Android or an Apple product before (like me) you'll probably expect the Tab to be switch on and go, sorry people it's all about the apps. The factory installed stuff will do the basics, but you really need to get on a wifi connection (don't pay for the downloads over 3g, it's just not worth it) and properly scour the market and the web for top 10 lists, then try loads until you find one that works exactly how you want it to.

An example - The pre-installed browser does it's job, but you'll find many sites still take you to the mobile version, with all those pixels on that screen the full web is what you want, Dolphin HD a tabbed browser with gesture support (draw a circle to refresh the page kind of thing) that automatically stops flash loading (tap the flash area and it loads) to keep pages fast and has a setting that gives you the full web for all sites, no more mobile sites. I tried about 6 others including two Opera versions, but I found this one to be the best for my personal taste. There are literally 10's of thousands of apps for free, and they're easy to get rid of as well so you can take your time and get the perfect mix. I could go on about apps forever but this a review of the Tab itself, so... Finally, don't pay for an app unless you know everything about it first.

All the cons have fixes.

Get a bag for your Tab, check out your local market stalls. The slippery finish can be sorted with a case or a cover. The glossy screen can be doubly protected against fingerprint/dirt and the bright light by using a screen protector, one that has an anti-glare coating and comes with a microfibre cloth.

So should you get one? Well that depends on if you're looking for switch on and go or if you want to make a fashion statement get an iPad. If you want a device that really works and has unlimited potential, get the Tab

This item was on my wish list for a long time, having looked at specifications of other smartphones and tablets I felt this was the one for me. Screen big enough to read without squinting, but small enough to fit in a coat or even a trouser pocket (briefly!). Price significant but do-able, once I felt I could justify it!

Well, I have some strong opinions about it, having played with it extensively over the last four months.
Firstly, never before having owned nor played with a smartphone, I think this product is absolutely amazing.
There are so many good things to say about it I'll mention just a few:
- lovely responsive touchscreen
- beautiful sleek design, love the white
- it will display most of my PC documents
- I have discovered some really useful apps and am sure I've just scratched the surface of what is available
- I can carry it everywhere, with a simple and fast swap between wifi and 3G internet is virtually always available
- I can use it in the bedroom, bathroom, car, parents house . . .
- wonderful battery life

I use the Galaxy Tab to help run my Ebay shop, this helps me because my big computer gets hogged by the kids and my laptop can be slow with poor battery life . . . so the Tab gives another dimension to my ability to get online.

Here are some of the reasons I haven't given the product 5 stars:
- clumsy to cut and paste, with different key combinations or menus required from different apps
- ok to switch between apps but prone to crashing, sometimes badly, when I do this very much, it is NOT like a PC and I doubt it ever will be (would a separate keyboard help I wonder?)
- some of my favourite and most complicated Office documents will not work on the Tab to open (long presentation) or to save properly (spreadsheet), which was very disappointing as this was a key reason I bought the tab
- drag and drop won't work in any browser I can find. Very disappointing for some tasks such as drag and drop web builders - impossible on the Tab
- office apps confusing and inflexible

I am going to compile a separate article soon on my favourite apps to help with my Ebay business - and a list of things I have so far failed to manage on the Tab.
I'll add a link in here once I've done it.

I hope you have found this review useful - if so please rate it below.
Many thanks for reading, and feel free to take a look at my other reviews and guides.

I was originally unsure about buying this but have had no regrets at all.
I have used it a lot to keep track of emails on the go. Much better sized on-screen keyboard than a smartphone but still fits in my jeams pocket (front and back).
I have access to my business email and my gmail accounts and even send and accept meeting invitations (a free app that is compatible with outlook).
I have used the free Android kindle App to supplement my kindle. I use the kindle in bright sunlight but the galaxy tab has a similar sized screen and is much easier to use when flicking backwards and forwards through a book, I think they're both great and the kindle store keeps my place so I can switch between the two easily.
I have used it as an MP3 player syncing with itunes (using doubletwist app) and listening to some language learning MP3s I had.
I've used the included satnav while walking - again a better sized screen that a smartphone but fits in my jeans pocket.
Not just a gimick - I give a lot of presentations so I ordered the TV cable - haven't used it in anger yet but I have a free app that will display my powerpoints. I also found some apps that will allow me to use the tab to control a presentation remotely via bluetooth or wifi.
I do quite a lot of network admin too - I have free apps to do ping, traceroute, telnet, ssh, monitor wifi, generate wifi heatmaps ....
(there are free network analysers too but I haven't tried them because they require root access and I don't want to there yet).
This is a great little tool which, because it fits in my pocket, is a lot more convenient for my purposes than a larger tablet would be.
I still use my laptop but don't feel the need to carry it with me all the time.

Bought for our sons birthday, was £180 used but as like new.

Came while he was at school and we set it up and had a go, installed some fantastic software for him to get going.

Have to say, I am well impressed with it, the size is great and not too big like the wifes Motorola Xoom 10" screen, picture quality is super for photo and video.

This allows you to go onto Facebook and play the games.

Wifi is a doddle and it picked up our connection straight away, he uses giffgaff as all his friends do for the free calls between each other and he was able to continue his unlimited web.

Touchscreen response is perfect and great if your playing games or flicking pages, we downloaded some educational games and language learning programs, all were free on the Android market. Loads rather quickly too asI though 512mb ram was small, but as I am not a technical person was thinking of the pc of years ago, so seems to be a fast speed for these things.

Battery time is terrific and holds its charge incredibly well.

This was a replacement for an 10" Android we bought him on ebay at half the price, it was poor in looks and quality, no response and didn't hold a charge and returned it, still not had the refund after 9 days.

But glad we chose this and to see him happily reading and listening from it is great.

Thinking of getting one myself
