Description
A series of blindingly bright lights appear all over Los Angeles, mesmerizing the citizens of the city while luring them to an uncertain fate in this sci-fi thriller from sibling filmmakers Greg and Colin Strause. As speculation regarding the origin of the mysterious lights runs rampant, a Los Angeles entrepreneur (Donald Faison), his best friend, Jarrod (Eric Balfour), and Jarrod's frightened girlfriend (Scottie Thompson) struggle to resist temptation as they seek out the source of the luminous threat. The Strause brothers, a renowned special effects pairing on other Hollywood blockbusters, demonstrate their phenomenal skills in SKYLINE with some truly breathtaking graphics for the audience to feast their eyes on. The genuinely impressive ‘moment of first contact’, during which the characters are transfixed by an eerie light emanating from a spacecraft, is a breathtaking sight to behold. SKYLINE delivers an eerie, sci-fi disaster movie that will leave you hanging on the edge of your seat.

The directors have worked on the SFX in everything from 2012 to Avatar, meaning that once we get outside, things [seriously] get going.

A Sci-fi bod, like myself, would be quite dissapointed in Skyline. The special effects are undoubtedly pretty awesome, and the ideas/concepts around the alien species are good, but don't expect anything like Independence day.

Infact I'm wrong, expect Independence day, but with worse acting (more on this later), as its all been done before. Aliens come and attack a big American city, they are ruthless and not diplomatic. A few survivors. Theres even some analogus to War of the Worlds where theres a crazy guy the main characters "camp" with. The army/airforce come in but it's not enough. Yawn.

I mentioned the acting; its a bit lame, and thats the biggest killer of this film combined with the poorly written script/story. You simply don't feel anything for any of the characters as they are just a load of youngsters who are too rich for their own good, and their characters are poorly developed in the story; I found it was very loosely put together and theres no sence of reality in it, unless you live the life of a celebrity. Driving Ferraris around, etc. But hey, this is just my opinion!

PROS
* Excellent special effects
* Nice ideas with the alien species

CONS
* Poorly written story
* Bad acting
* Too many similarities/cliches to previous blockbusters (ie it's all been done before).

When bright lights appear over LA and people start to disappear without trace, the next morning when the survivors look out of their windows and find out that they have been invaded by aliens.

In the good movie, with brilliant special effects, and good action and suspense, the acting is good too.

8.4/10 Movie.

There's more than a touch of deja vu about this quite gripping science fiction thriller. You will have seen lookalike aliens in Cloverfield, The War of the Worlds, The Matrix and even the hilarious Mars Attacks. That said, the movie has its moments, although the actual story virtually dries up after the first few minutes.

Skyline offers so much from The Brothers Strause who provided special effects 2012 and Avatar. Unfortuneately they forgot to use their undoubted talents on scripting and devising a storyline that makes this potentially excellent film lack substance
