Slaughterhouse Five - WOW! What a great movie! I had wanted to see this film for a long time, after reading the book in my mid teens.
Slaughterhouse-Five is an award-winning 1972 film adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's novel of the same name. The screenplay is by Stephen Geller and the film was directed by George Roy Hill. It stars Michael Sacks (in his first film), Ron Leibman, and Valerie Perrine.
The basis of the story is the central character Billy Pilgrim, who becomes "unstuck in time" and experiences the events of his life in a seemingly random order, including a period spent on the alien planet of Tralfamadore. Particular emphasis is placed on his experiences during World War II, including the bombing of Dresden in World War II, (Semi-autobiographical as Kurt Vonnegut was in Dresden during this time as a prisoner of war) as well as time spent with fellow prisoners of war Edgar Derby and the psychopathic Paul Lazzaro (played by Leibman).
Billy's life as a husband to Valencia, and father to Barbara and Robert are also depicted, as they live and sometimes even enjoy their life of affluence in Ilium, New York. The scenes of extraterrestrial life on Trafalmador feature Hollywood starlet and fellow abductee Montana Wildhack (played by Perrine). You may be thinking WTF?? But the film is an excellent interpretation of a book (like all Vonnegut’s major works) that straddles Science Fiction, fantasy, social commentary, and dark comic humour.
But these disparate elements are drawn together with a subtle hand, and watching the movie is an experience that will stay with you for many days afterwards. The acting and direction is top notch, and very quickly you empathise and accept the "normalness" of Billy's predicament, and therefore experience the gut wrenching shock as Billy is randomly pulled from one instance of his life to another.
Vonnegut said of the movie "I love George Roy Hill and Universal Pictures, who made a flawless translation of my novel Slaughterhouse-Five to the silver screen ... I drool and cackle every time I watch that film, because it is so harmonious with what I felt when I wrote the book."
If Vonnegut liked the movie, and you like Vonnegut's novels, then what are you waiting for?!?!?!
