Sony Ericsson W580i
Well, i am 15 years old (using my dads acount!!), peer presure means that a cool phone is vital, this phone fitted the bill perfectly as it is a walkman phone and it had a camera conceled within the slider of the phone. I had the phone bought as a birthday present as it was the phone that i wanted. When i had it in april 2008 it had a walkman player (thumbs up) and a 2mp camera (thumbs up). It was bought in boulevard black with orange accents (this is exclusive to the carphone warehouse). 18 months on and the phone still works fine, with absolutly no problems, although as i am a non texter it has taken me 18 months but i have still managed to crack the No 2 key staright down the middle. I am now a GCSE art student and need a good quality camera, the phone must sadly go as i do not want to have to carry a camera phone and a digital camera around with me. The sound quality is great but not as good as new walkman phones. the camera being 2mp gives great detail but the colour graining is dreadful, it has to be kept on night mode at all times to help prevent this (i don't know why it helps but it does....i found it on an internet fourum), when in very bright light this causes photos to become over exposed. This camera could also use some zoom, as i think it has a wide angle lens taking things yet further away. It has just recently started resetting the wallpaper, although it could have been a dodgy download from mobile9. The date and time has also resetted itself once(quite confusing when you get a text and look at the clock!!). Other than the few niggles it has been an absolutly great phone that i would recomend to anybody wanting a good alround mobile phone.
Can't wait to get an LG Viewty lite!!!
Mum is now having the phone so that it can be enjoyed for another couple of years.... long live the W580i!!!
Hope that this lenghty review (and story!!! lol)
Advertised AS a Sony W 8 5 0 i
I have wanted a Sony W 8 5 0 i for quite a while now and WAS going to buy the phone advertised by this "AndyOddSocks" from ebay....but HE "screwed" up the advert and was so late supplying me with the correct information that is was REALLY a W 5 8 0 i.....And he still not naswered my messages....Oh dear.
I finally managed to find TWO of these phones privately (Away from EBAY) for sale and Both them both.
My wife has one, now on O2, pay as you go and mine on T-Mobile.
2 mega pixels might not be that much by todays standards but it is sufficent for a reasonable photo.
my Fuji E510 is a 5 mega pixel camera and I only ever use that set the 3.....Both just need more Optical Zoom....Digital zoom just blurs the pixels and doesn't give such a good picture. So basically, just use the camera function for stuff you can clearly see at normal focus distance.
The phone itself is small enough to go in your pocket/handbag and large enough not to have to fumble with the buttons. Navigation buttons are a little small....NB don't cut your nails too short :-)
I wanted to protect the phone so bought a clear solid plastic case which clips to both sides of the phone and allows it to slide open and be used without having to take it out of the case. Only part exposed is a small section of buttons on the front of the phone at the bottom.
I have found it easy to use and the instruction booklets fairly easy to understand. I much prefer something which is virtually "plug and play" than have what I call the "Faffing About Factor"......just can't be doing with it....IF It don't work pretty much straight out of the box, then I either find something which IS easier to use and put it down to a bad experience and buy something that suits ME!
This one does.
Bought as a replacement for my old Motorla Colorado..(Otherwise named 3788)...anyone remember them? About 15 years ago, ARGOS were doing a deal PAYG phone, with £10.00 "air time" all for £29.99.....I have worn a couple of batteries out, but this phone is still in good working order....Always kept in a case (Worn a couple of thos out also :-) But it was just too big by todays standards.
The W850i is not SMALL by modern standards but since their introduction have proved to be a reliable model and IF it lasts as long as my last / 1st phone, then I will have no compliants.
maybe I will write another report in 15 years about the next new/ used phone I buy.
Go for the KISS method of operation.....

Sony Ericsson w580i user review
When i saw this phone i quite liked the color and the sleek slide up design ,also that was unlocked which i wanted.
Using the phone is easy the color menu is greatly organized ,it has quite a lot of
features including wap and blue tooth, also love the fitness section ,you can keep record of any physical activity.
The camera 2.0 mega pixel but found that makes a so much nicer picture that my real camera ,which has up to 10 mega pixel.
There are lot 's of features including a walkman feature which has got a great
playback sound and the battery of the phone is quite reasonable too.
I would highly reccomend this phone as is good quality great programs ,and can
suit for any age .

Mostly positive, but one negative.
What an excellent phone. Easy to use, and a pleasure. Long standby and talk time compared to others. The down side is the phone redirects, closes or sends and engaged tone to incoming calls when taken from pocket. The slide lock feature dose not work for incoming calls! This has to be the worst feature about this phone, but it is also true of most other phones on the market. For this reason I would not decline to recomend it. The camera works well in normal light only as you would expect with no flash. The radio is excellent as is the MP3 player. Screen is a bit small for internet, but it is just about sufficient. Nice being able to switch internet off for increased battery life. The phone is robust and withstands repeated drops and rough treatment. If something does break, spare parts are easily available and easily fitted.
Bearing in mind the above, I would recomend this phone.
A cheap feeling and delicate phone but works well!
The mind boggles when someone goes and purchases one of these phones!
It looks great to the eye, the screen looks bright and clear.
Here’s when the story starts……. I bought one in to repair and sell on,
pick it up it feels fragile and believe me it is!! I have been reading about owners that have moaned about the keys cracking in half especially if you text a lot as the keys do have a pounding and because they are small and thin the plastic suffers fatigue after a while. As to the functions I think it is excellent. An unbranded one when going through the menus look very much like a w850i with a few extra options thrown in.
A pedometer, which tells you how far you have walked or ran, and how may calories you have burnt off. Selectable multi coloured lights for incoming calls but these on the model I have only function if the phone is open when you receive a call.
Camera is nice and clear but no flash and I found this completely useless in dark conditions…Get the more robust k800i or k810i if you like camera functions on a phone, due mainly its xenon flash as you have in a dedicated digital or film camera.
For the technical, the phone is a nightmare to strip and repair especially for the first time, until you know the little short cuts while opening the phone up for a LCD repair or keypad change. The housing is flimsy and can break at the slightest wrong move.
For those who own one and like it, great! As I mentioned earlier the functions are great the phone works well and is almost alike to any of the modern Ericsson phones in menu functions. I would hate to take it to work or drop it from any height, as I know that the phone would be in bits by the time I would get home.
It maybe the phone for you, but it is definitely not the phone for me!
