One Smexy Phone

Created: 07/01/11
I'll begin by saying that I am overall very satisfied with this phone. I spent countless hours reading reviews and blogs ect. about this and other similar phones. I am glad I took the plunge.
(side note, as soon as I received the phone, update to 2.1 was available, my review is based on a 2.1 android X10).

Android > Iphone
Freedom out of the box, no need to unlock. Take a hint apple.

Basic functions
Phone has excellent call quality, no doubt a fix from the update. Performs basic duties without a hitch. One thing that may be considered a major drawback (it has been for me in some instances) is the lack of multitouch which as indicated by Sony is a hardware issue so there will be NO MULTITOUCH ON THIS PHONE, EVER. When gaming this really sucks. I found a way around it. WiiController.

Multimedia
This is a phone for people who like entertainment. Beautiful big screen. No need for millions of colors. My internet browsing experience has been pretty good, then again this is mostly dependent on your carrier. 3G(H) on T-mobile suits me fine. Mediascape takes some getting use to, but is very nicely packaged. All your media in one place, brilliant. I agree with some that Timescape is a little useless, I hardly use it, but every once in a while I pop in for a look at whats going on with everything social. I would rather have it than not. The phone is not without some cons. I'm sure this is not only my experience, but it is somewhat difficult to type on this one, at least in normal view. Among other things, it is simply too easy to hit "." rather than the space bar. I turned off auto correct it helps a bit. When typing long text messages the phone WILL lag. In fact unless you have a task killer (which you should have on any android anyway) the phone will visibly lag a bit anywhere. That is why this phone does not get 5 stars, lack of memory.

Camera
Simply great. As long as you are in a well lit (or using built in flash! sex!) areas, or during daylight hours, the photo quality is amazingly good for a phone. The HD video blew me away. I wish I didn't have to go to settings to turn on the flash though..

App
Why is this in everyones reviews? Its an android phone, they all have market. However, I'm including it here because you also get Sony Ericsson's App market with the phone. Note.

Hardware
Well, the cake is NOT a lie! This phone looks good and it performs really well. Dam you Sony for making such a great phone and then not supporting it better! Only hardware drawback I can think of is (and I thought people were being finicky on this one but turns out to be true) is the back cover. It is a bit flimsy. I have heard mine make creeeek-ing sounds.I don't like it one bit. Ordered InivisibleShield right away. And ofcourse the aforementioned RAM issue.
Note- I did not mention battery, because it really isn't an issue. With the proper use (i.e task killer, not having wi-fi on when you are not using it, turning brightness down when you are not looking at photos or watching video) the battery lasts all day and then some for me with normal use + some gaming, video, music.

Conclusion
Basically, the reviews are somewhat right on. The phone is great, it could have bested the iPhone on all counts, but sadly Sony Ericsson kind of missed the birdy by a few Centimeters. Would I buy it again? Yes, But because of my own personal tastes. I like my phones to look good, feel great, and play well. Some more picky and finicky folks might not feel as strongly. -FJ

Sony Ericsson's Marmite Phone..?

Created: 12/02/11
There seems to be a real love/hate divide over this phone - many people give it a glowing review, whereas others simply hate it - as for me, I've wanted to get hold of one of these for ages and I believe it has been thoroughly worth the wait - it's excellent, all over!
Of course, the phones' useability is always going to be compared to the industry standard that is Apples' iPhone - and naturally, the x10 will come up short in some respects (instinctive tactile image zoom using thumb and finger to 'stretch' the screen on the iPhone compared to a double-tap on the x10 for instance), but in others (8.1Mp camera on the x10, 5Mp on the iPhone) this phone excels.
Battery life is always a concern with energy intensive phones such as these, but it really does depend on intensity of use - many reviews complain that the x10 must be charged every day, whereas in my experience (and with moderate use) I only need plug in the charger once every 3 days. Switching off Bluetooth and WiFi when they're not required helps (only takes 2 steps to do either - one to get to the screen adjacent to the home screen and then one tap to toggle on or off - easy!) as does not trying to run endless applications at the same time. It's important to remember that any smartphone is basically set-up to work like a mini laptop or notebook - and how many hours' battery life can you get out of them before having to re-charge?
As for sound and display, picture quality is fantastic, screen size is generous and sound quality very nice. I have read that some people complain that when making phone calls it is difficult to get enough volume out of the phone, but again I have found no problem like this - and anyway, speaker volume is easily increased or decreased - only taking a few screen taps to do!
All in all, I am more than happy I chose to remain with Sony Ericsson as opposed to taking the standard route with the latest iPhone - highly recommended!

Dont pay for a brand like apple, buy for features!!!

Created: 07/07/10
This is the best phone I've had! Mainly because its unrestricted unlike apple and the phone is also fully customisable! I bought this phone as my girlfriend has an iphone 3gs 16gb, I didnt want the same phone as hers, and if she didnt like the iphone I could of swapped her for the x10... but Im so glad she likes her iphone lol now I can keep the x10 lol.

The phone itself isnt much bigger than the iphone, just afew millimetres, but if you look at apple's device you notice quite a big gap between the top and bottom of the phone to where the screen starts, but not on the x10. on the x10 you have an amazing 4INCH screen! everything is cyrstal clear. Its not as touch responsive as the iphone's screen if you press it extremeley lightly, but why would you want to press it as light as abit of hair??? you get widgets which you dont get with apple, these can be basically anything you want, Ive got my little xbox live avatar stood there on my background with a clock. unlike apple where you have the whole screen covered in apps, on the x10 you choose where you put the apps, you have 3 main pages on your background which you can select your own picture and say in the middle you could have a line of apps at the bottom of your screen. to move one all you have to do is touch it and drag it! so basically the whole phone is customisable which is my favorite point about this phone, my mate has the same phone and if i have a go on his, its completely diffrent!.. onto ringtones, where apples iphone can only have its preset ringtones unless you really mess about editing a song on the computer then connecting it up to your computer to transfering it... X10 has an app called ringdroid where you just select what part of the mp3 you want as a ringtone... simple!! also you dont need itunes so no more buying songs! i just plug my memory card into my pc and transfer all the free mp3s i downloaded on to my card. The camera is 8.1 megapixel which is still better than the new iphone 4, yes the iphone 4 has hd video but the x10 is capable too of that, in the next few months there will be an update for your phone what sony ericsson will release and your phone will automatically download it. the app store is also extremely good and there are many exclusive apps to android for example, I have an app what turns my phone into a metal detector! lol and it actually works! ive also got a world wide walkie talkie app that runs through 3g signal and because this phone has the best 3g hardware going at the moment it runs perfect, iphone can only do a walkie talkie through bluetooth. pointless apps but still android offers more than apple, android is ran by google so therefore your location and maps are quality, after all google is the leader in location and direction services. I have no problem turning my phone into a free sat nav. The bad point about phones with apps is the battery life, anyone who owns an android phone or iphone will tell you that, but a tip is to download 'advanced task killer' its free and closes any apps you have running in the background, using less memory and therefore saving battery... the x10 is also alot faster and fluid compared to the iphones, with its 1ghz processor compared to apples 600mhz which is cut down to 400mhz processor. it has an unusual amout of ram, 398mb where iphone's have 256mb. So basically if you dont want to pay for a make or brand and want to pay for quality and userbilty buy the x10, its the best phone out at them moment

Brilliant!!

Created: 12/08/10
I was a bit wary of buying the Xperia X10 because of all the negative reviews i had read about the bad battery life etc but i can honestly say that this is by far the best phone i have ever had!!

The camera is fantastic with the photos coming out very clear and brilliant quality (8mp). Although the zoom is rather rubbish (especially when you zoom to the max), the pictures come out blury and pretty much useless. There's lots of features to play about with so you get just the right image for particular situations. So on the whole the camera is great.

Timescape seems pretty much useless really but it is a fun addition to see all your facebook/twitter updates plus text messages and call history all in a long line. Mediascape is good, allowing you to see all you music, videos and photos in one place and allowing you to search the internet for more of that type/genre that you might like.

The browser can be fairly slow at times but this doesn't really bother me. Most of the time it is fine though. The Android Market is really good, just about every app you can think of is on there (however, not as many as the iTunes Store, but i'm sure it will get there in time). I've downloaded many new ringtones and wallpapers for free from there (because the ringtones/wallpapers actually on the phone are quite rubbish), as well as many games are free or fairly cheap.

The battery life is not that good but there are things you can do to prolong it. Things like; turning off Wi-Fi when not in use, turning off timescape and something that has really helped me is "Advanced Task Killer", i downloaded this app from the Android Market for free and it shuts down any other programmes that are running in the background. This helps to save you battery throughout the day. And although i charge my phone every night whilst i'm asleep, i would say but by doing these things i will get about a couple of days regular use out of my phone before it goes dead.

Another niggle for me is the call quality. When on the phone, people's voices can be quite quiet and hard to hear when you are outside as well as there has often been interferance (whether that is to do with the phone itself i dont know.

Another great feature with an Android-operated phone is that it can update to improve many features that maybe are not so good. I have heard that an update for the Xperia X10 is coming next month (September 2010) with improvements to Timescape, speed of the phone as a whole and the possibility of HD Video Recording (which i'm very excited about, although the video capture quality is rather good as it is).

So, in conclusion, I'd say that the Xperia X10 is a very good phone and a triumph for Sony Ericsson, as long as they keep updating and improving it; it will just get better and better.

Itunes or Android Market ?!?!

Created: 06/08/10
Anyone who has had an Iphone or Ipod/Itouch knows Itunes is easy to use, All the hype about Apps for everything and generaly everyone has one so it must be the best !!!!

Well I hate Itunes (for too many reason to list here) but i guessed Android market was the same, how wrong was i.

Its easy to down load, tons of free apps and there is (nearly) an app for everything. all the ones i had on my itouch i now have on my X10. Its easy to slide the apps into 1 of the 3 main screens and the apps feel and act like the Iphone apps. But the X10 can run more than one at a time so None of this ending the app before starting a new app. also for this reason its worth getting the App killer app, its free and dead easy.

What about the rest of the phones software, Timescape which brings all your messages, calls, facebook, etc into one screen is very pretty but also abit pointless and a waste of a complete screen, not as good as blackberry. Mediascape which is the music, video and photo navigator works but loses your last point, you have to view every with the "More" screen instead of the "MY music" default which gets abit frustrating, but the sound quality is great (X10 (sony) headphones are OK ish) and the video playback is lovely.

The battery life is ok, i recommend an additional USB lead to charge it at work, but i use the X10 all day as an mp3 player, it will last the day along with a few text messages, browsing and a few phone calls. The screen is very clear and alot better than the Iphone/blackberry but its abit too shiny. The 8.1m camera is good, its not as good as say a real camera but its good enough for drunken pictures of your beer which you can quickly posted on facebook.

I view Iphone and Itunes like AOL (ask your dad if your under 25) , it was a nice step into the world of the internet, clean, controlled, structured and made something massive seem very easy to understand ..... then came Firefox and internet explore and people understood that their was no need for AOL anymore and its controlling view of the net.

X10 and android are the next step for Apps and phones, there is no need for the controlling world of apple anymore and with android open source and more companys making different types of phones with android this can only get better.
