Product description

Product Information
This Sony 16.2 MP camera features innovative translucent mirror technology, which directs light to both the image sensor and the Phase Detection autofocus sensor simultaneously, allowing for enhanced image quality and shooting effectiveness. Moreover, the translucent mirror enables the Sony alpha A55 to shoot 16.2 MP resolution photos at up to 10 fps while maintaining continuous autofocus and auto-exposure. As for the video recording features, this digital SLR camera retains the same fast and precise phase detection as for still images. The APS-C size sensor of this Sony 16.2 MP camera delivers a good combination of resolution and sensitivity. Low-light shooting without a flash is also possible, since the Sony alpha A55 features multi-frame NR technology. This digital SLR camera can capture six photos in a fraction of a second, and combines the data from all six to create a single photo with a reduction in noise equivalent to two additional steps of ISO sensitivity. The black body of this Sony 16.2 MP camera weighs approximately 441 g. It is 9 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 8.5 cm deep.

Completely happy with the camera. Excellent picture quality. Whilst there have been some comments regarding the EVF (electronic viewfinder) I am perfectly happy with it, it is certainly good enough resolution for picture composition and viewing pictures. There is always the LCD screen anyway. The frame burst rate of 10 fps is amazing. Lots of control over the various scene settings (contrast, brightness etc.)HDR function works well. Nice weight in the hand. HD video is good. For a beginner the auto and auto+ features will be great. For the more adventurous there is plenty of scope to adjust settings. SLT is the future!

I wanted a camera that lets me experience various ranges DSLRs have to offer - semi and full manual options available.

I am not specifically going to explain the various options as there are plenty of reviews by good enthusiasts and professionals to help you make up your mind. However, this is a fantastic camera packed with many useful and creative features - entry level DSLR? I don't think so. Takes very good pictures and with the added benefit of burst mode (10 frames per second), almost acts like a professional camera. If you are serious about exploring the delights of using a good quality digital SLR camera then you could do a lot worse than choose this model - Which magazine awarded it 84% and a Best Buy with it.

If I have any gripes it lies in the limited HD recording time and perhaps a few more mega-pixels would have been better, but in all honesty I did not buy this camera for HD recordings and the mega-pixel is more than adequate for most situations.

The trade off with not purchasing the Cannon EOS600D was the maximum shots per second, 10 vs 3.7; but the trade off was losing 2 mega-pixels.

What about the future? Perhaps (if funds allow) moving up to the Alpha 65 or 77 - come on Camelot give me a call!

Addendum.........Since writing the Review below, my situation has changed a little. The Review stands as written for the A55.
However, I have now purchased the new Sony A77 and due to its outstanding performance, I have sold all my Hasselblad equipment.
The A77 is simply a stunning performer and the advantage of cropping around 25Mp shots and still having a superb high res result has been invaluable to me.
Having said that, my opinion is that the A55 is a stunning buy!

The Review:
I have been using a borrowed Sony A55 and must say that I am mightily impressed.

To put things in perspective, I own a Hasselblad Digital system for serious work and have hung on to my Konica Minolta A2 for more general contributions.
I do, therefore, expect battleship quality coupled with longevity and value for money. At the price the A55 is offered, it will be the balancing act that Sony has achieved that will impress or disappoint.

The reason for mentioning the A2, is that the A2(now 10 years old)is the camera that Sony has emulated with the A55 (Sony bought Konica Minolta in 2006 ,I think it was).

All DSLRs have the same problems....a big flappy mirror that gives all sorts of problems unique to it,a 'dead' viewfinder when taking the actual shot or shooting video, a lot of weight and volume to cart around, and invariably a high price tag. That lot also goes for my Hasselblad, which is frankly simply superb otherwise and given that you accept exactly what this kit is,I have nothing but admiration for it.

My A2 doesn't have a mirror at all, allows you to see the subject ALL the time and is small and light to carry. It does not have interchangeable lenses (just a super zoom!).

Along comes the A55.........as small as the A2( that's fabulous) and with all its features PLUS interchangeable lenses, 16Mp chip (great stuff!),HD video, panoramic scan, 3D recording, horizontal markers for viewfinder leveling, a shooting rate of a mind boggling 10 frames/sec (hugely faster than any DSLR) and a host of other features that many users will enjoy.Oh, and a full blown GPS (yes, GPS)system to imprint your shots, so that you can automatically display your position on a computer based mapping system anywhere in the World. How cool is that for the money?

Another BIG advantage is the ability of the camera to use dozens of existing low cost (but excellent quality) lenses from Minolta and Sony. Look on eBay!!

Above all, though, the camera is small, compact and light. For me, this is a huge advantage.
I don't know the 'design life' that Sony has built into the A55 but A2s have gone for 10 years hard useage without any problems at all. Technology will almost certainly call for your new camera to be replaced before then!

I was impressed enough with what I have seen, to go ahead and order the A55.
This will give me a chance to really get to grips in detail with this revolutionary design and write another more searching review based on personal useage.
If I like it, it will be a God-send...if not, you might grab a bargain on eBay!

Review for: Sony α (alpha) A55 16.2 MP Digital SLR Camera - Black (Body only)
it seems that is a very good mid-range camera, there are some very important improvements that I have mentioned such as the viewfinder, the panorama, the video etc. On the other hand the battery is not so good as in previous models and the camera seems to be more and more electronic in comparison to sony a 350 i also have and the minolta 7D. I will post a detailed review after checking the camera for some time. This is only preliminary because I own the camera only few days. The sensor by the way and the quality of pictures are brilliant. I think that sony must print a full compatibility manuscript with the previous and new lenses that feet fit the camera. For example does the 400mm sigma autofocus works in sony a 55 or works only manually. There are many lenses good in quality and past series that sony should inform us for the compatibility.
It seems at least a very good camera to me considering the photo quality.

Review for: Sony α (alpha) A55 16.2 MP Digital SLR Camera - Black (Body only)
I have owned the Sony Alpha 200 , and now own A37 & A55 , both of these cameras offer some excellent features , I would highly recommend either the a37 or a55 and the other benefits are the Minolta A fit lense fit these as well , 7 fps on the a37 and 10 fps on the a55 a57 etc , good camera , bit small in the body for some large handed people , but I dont have small hands and this as not been a problem for me
