    Album Notes
Pianist Stan Kenton was one of the few leaders of the big band era whose popularity extended even into the 1970s, in part because Kenton didn't rely upon nostalgia and kept his music evolving. Kenton's orchestra was always one of the most progressive, even in its heyday, embracing bebop and even contemporary classical elements. This two-CD set spans the breadth of Kenton's career, from lighthearted fare like "Balboa Bash" to the dramatic "MacArthur Park," from easy, cheerful swing to intricate, adventuresome compositions.
