The best TV show of all time
| Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
Well, what can I say? It’s certainly the best TV series of all time and for those of you that have never seen it, if you enjoyed The Road, Children of Men, I am Legend, do yourselves a favour and grab a copy, and, while you’re at it, forget the remake. This is the stuff. Filmed in the mid 70s Survivors captures the ethos of an era. Communial living, alternative lifestyle and challenging conventions.
Britain is down to a handful of people, a virus having wiped out all but a random few. Over night the survivors of the plague have been plunged back into an essentially iron-age world where technology can no longer be sustained, old skills must be re-learned, existing knowledge preserved. Set in rural England through a bleak winter, the survivors form into factions, take over farm houses, manor houses, scavenge what little they can, guns, clothes and food and fuel. Towns are off limits, disease and dogs pick off the weak. This is no glossy American film, it’s a gritty, muddy, wet, cold world filmed in the muted tones of yesteryear.
Survivors is a masterpiece of television, a very real look at what may happen in world where society breaks down; where everything we take for granted is gone, water, power, medicine and law. Structured around a central cast of remarkably well realised characters, the three series that comprise Survivors, deal as much with different ideologies as with the fight for survival itself. The eleven disc DVD set isn’t populated with glossy extras, or outtakes, voice over’s or a set of character postcards, its a no nonsense compact set featuring all thirty eight original BBC episodes; each one a gem to be watched by the glow of firelight and the flicker of a candle. Lock the door, keep the gun close to hand, and enjoy. This is reality TV.

Survivors - 1st series - made in the 70's - series 1-3
Great series. Made and set in the 70's so not glossy or over produced. Realistic, gritty, and so much more believable than the new series. In this one they talk about disease, cholera, flies, smell, millions of rotting bodies in the cities, and rotting animal corpses in the country, and the real problems of just surviving. How to find clean water, grow crops, make things. The skills we have lost now everything is supplied pre-packaged.
The new series did not include any of the realistic horror of 95% of the worlds population dying in just a few days and the loneliness of the survivors.
I am looking forward to watching all 3 series, only half way thro' 1st series at present....but it does make you think...... which the new series did not !!

Survivors - the original series from the 1970's
Excellent, I had forgotten how good this series was. Now I have been able to view the episodes I missed when it was originally screened.
I don't remember the main characters looking so young - but that's because we are all more than 30 years older now!
Fascinating to see how everything now looks so old fashioned. Excellent dvd and would recommend it, especially if you have fond memories of the original series. Very interesting to compare with the characters in the current series. What a difference between the old "Tom Price" character and the new one!
Survivors - Series 1-3 - Complete (DVD)
Purchased this box set, due to having watched some of the Original on TV years ago!
Drama is about a virulent strain of 'flu/plague escaping from a laboratory accident.
Then due to so much movement and air travel around the world the disease is quickly carried everywhere killing millions.
The remnant are then left to put things back together without any help, some are more successful than others but, as always there's the 'scum' element who prey on the weak and helpless, taking what they want without a thought of what the consequnces will be years later.
There are Three series in total, so sit back with a brew and buttie and enjoy yourself with a very engrossing drama of "What if" and what could happen when something like this happens or.... has it already happened?!
Dated, but that's one of it's advantages!
The acting might be a tad cheezy occasionally, there's zero special effects, but for something shot 35 years ago it's not surprising!
The original series will show some similarities with the latest BBC remake (and Terry Nations first Survivors book), but the original series is much "deeper" with the social effects of a post apocalyptic world being at the fore.
The rather dated stereotypes will no doubt annoy some, but sometimes they are a charming view of the times. It's a more thought provoking series and less "disposable" than a modern series which does of course mean that you'll have to "stick with it" if you have a short attention span or need special effects.
