TVONICS DTR-Z500. GOOD AS LONG AS HDMI IS NOT ESSENTIAL
The Tvonics DTR-Z500 freeview box has the same remote as sky, it's easy to use, comfy to hold and very well laid out buttons. Now and then you may need to turn off box as they do lock up but this isn't a regular thing, no more than other freeview boxes on the market. Two channels can be recorded at the same time but you cannot watch a third but I don't find this too much of a problem.
The humax freeview box is on a par with tvonics, sometimes better BUT the remote with Tvonics is MUCH better than the cheap remote supplied with the humax. The DTR-Z500 has scart connections BUT no HDMI which is one area where the humax beats it. The tvonics range does have a model with HDMI and a USB port for picture viewer, the DTR-HV250 but it does cost more at £ 209.99 retail.
Should you buy a tvonics box new or secondhand from ebay don't forget to retune for your tv region (very easy) as is setting the remote control to control your tv and dvd player so you can use the tvonics (sky) remote most of the time. If only all remote controls were as good as the tvonics.

Overall this is a very good product. The EPG is intuitive and easy to use and because it is semi-transparent, allows the current programme to be seen while in use. The EPG is also fast and responsive unlike some recorders. It is very easy to record and delete programmes and has enormous capacity (250-300 hours). It's ability to pause and rewind live programmes is great. Again, unlike some recorders I've owned, it has proved 100% reliable in recording stuff. It has very low energy consumtion in standby (3 watts) and automatically switches to standby at 3am if you forget to turn it off. It is also very quiet. The remote is quite intuitive. My only quibble is that it is quite slow to start up - around 5 seconds after pressing the power button. It's also good to buy something that's actually made in the UK. In this case by a spin-off from the Sony TV operation in South Wales.
Robust and efficient
| Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
This is my third TVonics machine - the other two are still functioning although the oldest (a DTR-HC250) does have an intermittent "freezing" problem. So I am a fan of these freeview recorders. With my two latest machines, they both work well with no problems so far. My only (minor) gripe would be that the remote that comes with the DTR-Z500 machine is not quite so user friendly as the one for the other earlier machines.
Get one of these NOW!!!
Get one now they are excellent this is three I own and have had no problems in the four years I have ownd them.
