SatNav - Tom Tom Go

Created: 11/05/08
Tom tom go, well, it’s a sat nav device that hooks up to a satellite by GPS. This entry model sure is better than other I've tried out. It's quick & easy to use, not bad for a beginner. You type in a postcode or street name and it will guide you there will little or no bother. When a road it is taking you to is inaccessible it will reroute you, but you first have to continue away from the guided route down unknown roads before it click on that you don’t wish to go that way. But hey it's better than a road map ;-)

You can store you home address giving you one touch route home. You can also store other locations so that you don’t have to retype them in, just pick form a saved list.

This great little unit also warns of known speed camera locations and accident hot spots, it also warns of know speed restrictions (you must of course buy the add on's)

You can also download other things, for example point of interest & congestion charge zones.

PLEASE BEWARE:- Lock your tom tom up in your glove box or boot and remove any marks for the windscreen before you leave your car unattended. Trust me, thieves know what to look out for.

My thoughts

I bought this version to use as both sat nav and hands free for mobile whilst driving. It is very easy to install and operate and by connecting to a pc you can check for useful updates. However,I have been unable to use in hands free mode as yet and when I contacted tom tom to see if this model allowed hands free connection or if I could obtain an upgrade to enable this, I was sent a page of instructions which I did not understand. A simple yes or no would have been considerably less frustrating.

Oh for the best of both!

I've used both a Tom-Tom Go and a Garmin nuvi. If only they combined their good points we'd have an excellent machine. The Tom-Tom wins hands down on getting a speedier, closer and more accurate satellite fix, on advanced lane positioning information, control over selecting the type of journey (fastest/most direct/avoid motorways etc) and volume control for voice prompts. The Garmin is better with verbal advance warnings and verbal advice when recalculating (with the Tom-Tom I've had to drive off and back onto a Motorway just to make sure it's still working), is easier to use to find local POIs, to instantly record "where you are now" (very useful when you want to find your way back in a strange town), fixed speed camera warnings are confined to those that apply to direction of travel and it has possible mobile camera alerts (something missing from the Tom-Tom). Website update site for Tom-Tom is more user-friendly than that for the Garmin. After sales service is superb for the Garmin but indifferent with respect to the Tom-Tom. When you want to use your own route for part of the route the Tom-Tom accepts this more readily than the Garmin, ie the latter persists in trying to find a way back to the route it planned even when quite absurd. For me that's probably the clincher!

Good, simple piece of kit

I used to have a Tom Tom 300, but it (and the car that it was in) was stolen - so I went onto Ebay and found a 2nd hand one which is in great condition. By the way, make sure that it has all the product code and registration details and the CD etc.
I love this model as it suits my needs perfectly. It is simple to use and the mapping is excellent. Mine has had the speed cameras loaded onto it which is really handy. It has never let me down or sent me on a wild goose chase yet! My top tip is that if you know roughly where you are going and have a mental route in your mind, then go the way you want to and don't swich on the satnav until you really need it. Sometimes it will do annoying things like take you on the motorway which may be quickest way on paper, but is more likely to be jammed up. Go the way you want to go and then when you are a bit nearer the destination and need the directions, switch on and it will take you there.
