You really can't go wrong with a Tomtom, highly recommended.

I'd always fancied a sat nav and knew that Tomtom was a market leading manufacturer so after a little bit of research into the different models it seemed like the One XL was one of the better models that was available at the time in my £50 price range. I'd been outbid on 1 that went upto £68 so didn't have much faith in getting this 1 but I managed to win this for the bargain price of £41 plus £4.50 p+p, more than happy with that! As soon as I received the item I knew I'd made the right decision, the unit itself is aesthetically pleasing and the cradle is very clever and easy to use. I was a little concerned that mine came with no instructions but after a couple of minutes play around I'd programmed my home location and sorted out the fastest route to get me to work, a testament to the Tomtoms easy menu system. I don't particularly like the English speaking woman so I've changed that to the Irish woman which was also easy to do. A neat touch is the speed sensitive volume which increases the volume to compensate for the extra road noise at faster speeds. Also I didn't get a pc cable to connect for updates but they're available for about £2 also on Ebay so don't let that put you off. First job when my cable arrives is to update the unit then download C3PO as the voice! Quite how this compares with other similar products I don't know but from the reviews I've read on the 'net you really can't go far wrong with a Tomtom.

TomTom XL Classic 1GB - regional UK&I
Created: 12/03/11
This SatNav is good enough, I got it used (very cheap) and it's working fine. This version is the Classic Regional (1GB Internal Memory) but it has SD card slot (SDHC over 4 GB Compatible). I tried the SatNav as it came NavCore 8.010 nad UK&I Maps 8.00 , all good fast enough.
Then I upgraded the NavCore to 9.101 SE using TomTom 940 (x40 Family) as Emulation and I added UK map 8.65 the latest one (Febr 2011). Then I added Voice and SpeedCam and all the other stuff. All good the SatNav reacted fast and with no issues at all I have full support of IQ and Lane Guidance but due to "lack of microphone" the speach recognition isn't working (move to model x20 or x30 if you need this feature. Full support with MapShare
Other step I tried to install Western & Central Europe 2.4 GB (on an SDHC 8 GB) all working fine, but I have to say the TomTom gets a little bit slower with NavCore 9.101 let's say usable but not the best, so in case you want to use maps on then SD I suggest the firmware 8.8 which is good (bascially no big changes with 9.1) and much faster specially into cities.
Then I installed ttpalyer on it and I tried to play movies from the Sd Card, everything is running fine and smooth. No crashes and all feature.
The End Of The Story.....
I got this TT One XL for 60 quids and I'm more than happy. I use it with UK&I maps and NavCore 9.1 then I added Italy as well as a Map on the internal card. As Plus I always carry my SD card with Europe and US maps just in case and of course if I want to watch a movie..I can just stick it into the SD Card.
Please note on this model you can use OR SD Card OR Internal Memory, not Both Simultaneously.
Overall I have to say I'm happy enough for 60 Quid. I would have appreciated 64 Mb of Ram instead of 32mb that's I would have moved to a different model with 64 Mb and 2 GB internal memory and forget about the XL ... the smaller one is more than enough...but that's just my opinion... If you desperetly need Europe Maps, move to the 2GB internal memory for extra speed.
Enjoy.

I bought this SatNav as a replacement for a TomTom One that had given excellent service but was now very dated. The new unit was easy to set up as most of the features were similar to the previous one. The big advantage was the wider screen which allows the travel info to be set down the side in larger size script.
However, after just a few days of use, I noticed several things, about the new unit, which disappointed me. First, the mounting is a pain to attach and remove from the vehicle screen. Then the mounting broke and took 10 days to be replaced. Secondly, the mapping was very old and despite an online update still did not show road changes that had taken place up to 9 years ago.
Thirdly, my old set displayed a complete keyboard of letters and numerals which made Post Coding very quick. On the new unit, you have to jump between pages.
Finally, the XL is SLOWWWWWWWW. For the money I paid, I expected something much quicker. The screen page changing are slow. You can not rush entering destination details and when on the move, the unit updates too slowly which often means driving past turnings. Especially on roundabouts.
I was disappointed by this purchase.

Given that this is my first sat nav and can only compare it with a six year old built in model in my wife's car I find this model covers all requirements. No problem picking up signals, some debate on chosen route at times, but instructions are given clearly and in good time. Overall - good value for money.
