Tomtom Rider Version 2
Created: 09/01/08
I really rate this GPS system - reliable, intuitive, robust and some nice details.
I have mounted mine on my BMW R1200RT and although it was fiddly to fit the RAM mount, i hve mounted it on the left had side and gives me perfect visibility. A nice touch is that when you load Tomtom Home from the CD, it recognises where youa re and feeds this to the GPS - this makes acquiring satelites for the first time very quick. After that, it fires up in a coupe of seconds every time. The bluetooth headset fits my Schuberth helmet without any problem and although the mic looks small, callers say they can hear me very well and are astounded when I say Im doing doing 70mph on the motorway! All operates very safely even with gloved hands.
The only downside is that I don't think the software is the same as on earlier versions - I can't seem to set the distance for warnings for the safety cameras.
In summary, i have used other GPS software but think TomTom by far the best. Its not the cheapest on the market but the best thought through product in my opinion.

Tom Tom Rider

I bought the Tom Tom Rider as I was using a PDA with GPS receiver solution and I wanted something a bit tidier.
The unit itself is fantastic. Extremley well made and very easy to set up. It found a signal straight away and is very easy to use with gloves on. You can also connect it to your phone via bluetooth and take calls on the move via the bluetooth helmet mounted mic and speaker.
You can also store music on it for those boring motorway hacks.
I haven't really used it for any serious distance travelling but have no quaims about doing so.
Buy one - you won't be disappointed!

Sat-nav designed for two wheels

The popular tomtom is now available for bikers. It fits both bikes and scooters, with a mounting kit of four pieces and a security strap to prevent it being swiped at the lights!
It's waterproof and the 3.5 inch touchscreen is designed to be used by a gloved hand. Very easy to use, it really is "plug and play". You can choose to plan a route by postcode, street name or tell it to take you to the nearest petrol station! You can down load Points of interest (POI) such as Speed cameras, London congestion zones, Sainsbury's shops, football grounds etc, free from many websites, but if you want to down load a large quantity I would advise you to purchase a bigger SD memory card (512Mb will be fine) It comes with a Bluetooth headset, so you can receive the spoken instructions or speed camera warnings etc as you ride.
Another bonus is the hands free mobile phone connection to the headset. When you are out on your bike it prevents you from making calls but allows you to receive them, although you can also use this unit in your car and if you do it senses this and allows you to make or receive calls and switches from glove friendly to in car mode.
In summary, a fine piece of kit that gives pizza delivery boys no more excuses!

Tom Tom Rider - Top Class!

I upgraded my car TomTom to a TomTom Rider, so that I could use it on my motorbike as well. As I found my Tom to be an essential piece of kit, and with the summer coming, and petrol going up, it seemed sensible to get a fully waterproof version, so I could use my bike more.
Easy to follow on the bike, easy to mount on handlebars and easy to wire to the bike battery (and I'm a girl!), it has delivered as I hoped and has been reliable too. It conveniently swaps to car/bike mode automatically and charges in my cigarette lighter whilst driving in the car (I don't understand the comment left earlier saying that it wouldn't charge when the flap was open). Only drawback is the on/off switch which is quite hard to depress - however it's not rocket science and is definately not putting me off using the system. I'm using it without sound at the moment on the bike, but have the earpiece to use with bluetooth or to attach to the inside of my helmet. Following the directions is very clear as is.

TomTom Rider v1
Created: 05/01/09
Bought the Rider v1 from eBay. Installation on my BMW R1100S was a bit tricky as Beemers don't have handle bars or standard mirror clamps, and I couldn't bring myself to glue it to the dash! So with a few extra bolts and some trial and error, I got it clamp mounted safely on a front fairing support strut, just under the ignition switch housing, and it works great. Bluetooth comms to helmet also worked well pairing with headset and mobile a piece of cake. Even braved the -2oC to test it on the road. The Rider screen is very clear even in the low winter sun. Looking forward to my next long trip. Anyone who wants to mount the Rider to an 1100S I am happy to send pictures of the mounting method used. Thanks,
