Like many I bought the lens for its performance in low light and because... well because it's cheap.
Everything that can be said about this lens has been said. But anyway...
The build quality is very low, but to be honest, I got mine for £60... The next lens up is at least 4x that price. And it's not unusable, in fact I quite like how light it is. Also, if you're taking pictures on the street, a whacking great big zoom lens turns a few too many heads for my liking...
It is also worth mentioning that going down to 1.8 when shooting film on a dslr can get some wonderful film like results (although you'll need a bit of practice with the focus ring).
If you've only experienced your dslr with the kit lens (and are put off by the price of upgrading), then you have to have a go with one of these. It takes some people a while to get used to a fixed lens, but after 20 minutes I'm sure you'll regret not buying this lens sooner.

Cheap and cheerful, but it works a treat in most light conditions and is a lot faster than the Canon kit lens options. Compared to my other lenses it extremely lightweight and is ideal for portrait shots indoors. Given it's relatively low price tag of some £70 it's a must have for all Canon EF users.

Good Lens takes a bit of getting used to the fact that it is fixed so you cant zoom in out etc. Nice depth of field on subjects. Good for portraits and close up details.

This is one of the best Canon lenses although the build quality is not so good.
It is a sharp lens that has produced great results. The colors are very nice, f/1.8 is usable, and once you stop it down to f/2.2 it is extremely sharp, f/8 hits optimal sharpness and is great for shooting full-frames. Great for people starting out to learn the basics of photography and produce great results.
