Canon FD lens. 50mm f/1.8, A real beauty
Created: 06/07/10
I found this lens on Ebay with 6 minutes to go and placed a sneaky bid, Now I'm so glad i won it! It's become my 'go to' lens when I'm out with the camera as it's pretty versatile and very easy to get to know.
The Focus ring is smooth as anything, the F/stops are all nice and solid, even the half stops are definite (unlike cheaper lenses)
Being FD mount it's one of the easiest and fastest mount types around, and Canon Glass is second to none for the money - I've attached a skylight filter to this lens and It's absolutely sings!!
I've shot two rolls of Film through this and it's fantastic lens, lovely and contrasty too, seems to really make colours Pop! Razor sharp focus from Wide open to shut, i just can't fault it at all, If you come across one, it's well worth the money, and I only got mine for under £10.00
Bokeh is nice and smooth, nothing to extreme but just right, and you can get some absolutely stunning shots at around f/5.6
The best feature is being able to actually preview the aperture whilst your setting the shot up, a lot of the FD lenses don't actually stop down to the aperture you've chosen until you've pressed the shutter release, but this one does everything before hand, so you can preview the Depth of field, the Bokeh, Everything.
This is a Worthy addition to any keen photographers lens collection, A great Prime lens, and certainly worth keeping an eye out for.
Don't forget some of these lenses are compatible with Pentax K-mount.

Great value lens, especially for DSLR video makers

This is a classic Canon lens from the great days of manual focus. I bought it for use with may micro Hour Thirds cameras for both stills and video. The wide aperture makes it a great lens for indoors and low light and, with the M43 crop factor of 2x, it provides the same field of view as a 100mm lens on full frame. For me, that's ideal portrait/close-up length.
It also works well as a 75mm-equiavkent lens on my Canon DSLRs, with a good quality adapter
It's especially good for small-room concerts, where the light is usually poor/unreliable, and there's not much room to move.
These lenses have become very popular in the last few months for DSLR video makers - and I can see why

Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 Lens
Created: 04/11/08
The Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 Lens is an ideal lens for general 35mm photography and to give an indication of the field of view, close one eye and look straight ahead... what you see is roughly equivalent to 50mm. Although zoom lenses have an advantage because you can alter the field of view without walking forward or back to get more or less detail in the picture, their disadvantage is the maximum aperture which is smaller. This lens has a maximum aperture of f1.8 so it enables you to take photos where the available light is poor.

Standard and common lens.

Standard lens. You'll find these a lot in charity shops but watch for fungus. Sometimes you'd do better to buy one that comes with a body and selling the body (model dependant) to make your money back.
Like I say, a VERY common lens. I prefer the 24mm FD lens myself which gives a good wide angle without distortion.

A must have 'nifty fifty' for A-Series Canons.

I've just started using my Canon AE-1 again & have run a roll of Fuji Reala through it using my recently purchased Canon FD 1.8 50mm lens. The quality of this (standard) lens is stunning, even at wide open apertures where the superb even bokeh (out of focus area) makes for attention grabbing shots. This lens really is the business and is now so inexpensive it makes it a must have. It is way sharper than the (very commendable) 35-70mm zoom that I bought originally to go with this camera so my advice, for what it's worth, is just buy one!
