Garmin eTrex Legend HCx GPS Receiver

Wanted to upgrade my regular vanilla (well banana yellow actually) Etrex which was not working too well, with a unit that also had mapping capabilities for occasional driving use. Mostly the Etrex is to be used for mountainbiking. This fits the bill although to be honest it is not as ideal for driving as a dedicated unit - no voice, small screen, less user friendly, it is quite fiddly to actually enter a destination and route. So if you are going to be using a GPS a lot on-road then buy a dedicated unit i.e. buy two GPSs one for your biking/trekking and one for your driving. I'm 90/10 so I will get by.

But for it's main purpose it is great, primarily because of the fantastic sensitivity of the receiver compared to my other Etrex. My other one would not work well or not at all on a forested hillside and especially so if there was cloud cover too, this one acquires even indoors!

One minor niggle is that the black and white Etrex has better contrast and it is easier to follow a trail. It is essential to have the backlight on all the time to follow a trail with the colour screen.

Actually if all I wanted was a biking / trekking GPS (or would be buying a separate driving one) and hence cared not for mapping, a basic Etrex H (High Sensitivity) would almost certainly be enough.

i use this for geocaching, its brilliant!! you can upgrade the maps to whatever level detail you need or for whatever purpose its so versatile its great.

it locks onto signal FAST from cold, some gps take 2-3 mins, not this one, less than 1min inside my house and its ready to go!!

if your hiking, driving, geocaching, this is a fantastic device and the battery life is great too approx 15hrs easily with lithium batteries constant use with back light on, if your even thinking about it, just go for it, you wont be disapointed.

Can take up to a 4GB micro SD card which is more than ample for Mapsource maps ( I have the whole of the Topo GB UK map set on it and it uses less than 1 GB)

The GPS receiever is fast to lock onto satellites and immediately provides 3-4m accuracy indoors!! (well, by the window anyhow)

Although lacking the electronic compass and barometric altimeter of the Vista model, this is an excellent, rugged little unit.
