Sven Goran Erik-Sun
Wow! A wonderful night for English football. Sven may have made an acrimonious exit as England Manager, but at least he left us with this memory.
It starts badly. Germany score the opening goal after 5 minutes, and it looks like we are on for a hiding. The German supporters are in full voice, and start cheering everytime the ball is passed to a German player. Germany try playing "keep ball", but fortunately their fun is about to end.
Owen scores a hat-trick in possibly his best England performance. He was full of energy, and gave the German defence a huge problem in marking him. Gerrard scored a vital goal, in extra time at the end of the first half.
England went into the dressing room at half time 2 goals against Germany's one.
But as England fans will tell you, it was still too early to relax, we have been through this many times before. And remember, this was in Germany, they were on home ground, and they were not used to losing at home.
Second half was the best England performance for many a year. 3 goals, one from Heskey, and another two from Owen to claim his hat-trick. Germany was in shock! The German fans were leaving the game early. Never had they witnessed such a drubbing by a visiting team.
An important match, it was a qualifier, and England routed the current group leaders. Smiles all around the England camp, Sven had delivered a great England performance.
And the next morning all I can remember hearing is;
"what time is it? Oh yeah, it's five past Germany"
Germany 1 England 5 Munich (dvd)
After watching the match for the first time on the t.v. I wished I had taped it. So I was happy to acquire a copy of it at a reasonable price. I prefer it as it is on dvd and not on vhs and there were quite a few copies to be had. It was an excellent game, even if we let them score first! The only moan would be that i bought a copy without the proper protective plastic cover, but then that was my choice! When I bought it the world cup was still going on so it reminded me with seeing the England team play again that I was after it. It's one that you can feel good watching it over and over again. A good buy.
Two World Wars and One World Cup... C'mon England!!!
What a day it was,
I was in Soho watching the game on the tv in what was my local pub, the Red Lion, screaming at the top of my voice jumping all over the place and when the final whistle went I couldnt belive it 5-1, Germany!
I went running down to Trafalgar Square pint in hand and an England flag tied round my neck to join the couple of hundred England fans that were already there, I jumped up on one of the Loins heads and there I was for the next 5 hours or so jumping , scream and cheering on England and as time went by more and more fans turned up and at the peek of it there must of been 3 thousand or so fans enjoying it big time...
It will alawys stay with me as one of the best days in my life!
So if you want to capture the thrills and excitment of that day then I recomend this DvD.
Not to be missed
