Dell Dimension 2400 given a second lease of life
Created: 10/04/11
While no longer my Number 1 PC, I’ve a Dell Dimension 2400 from new (circa 2004). It came with a factory fitted Intel Celeron 2.4 GHz CPU (128 KBs cache). Obviously, over the years with the introduction of Microsoft XP and Vista operating platforms, such Intel Celeron CPUs have struggled to cope with more memory hungry applications.
The resulting CPU upgrade to an Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz (512 KBs cache) has really put life into the ole’ boy. And, much to my surprise proved quite straightforward and ridiculously cheap to do – always subject of course to the necessary ‘homework’ being carried beforehand. Being that it’s crucial to find out the range of CPU make and models that are compatible with a specific motherboard. For Dell Dimension users valuable sources of information are the Dell Support Technical Specification web pages for all Dell’s past and present models.
