MSI Wind U135 10.1" 1660 MHz Laptop PC
Created: 25/05/11
The MSI is THE perfect mini-laptop. It's 10.1 inch screen makes it a great travel accessory without making you have to squint to see the page. The keyboard is easy to use (although I cannot find the £ sign! It's not the usual "Shift+3" but I will find it!). The sound is good too. I actually have nothing negative to say and am so glad I bought it. It does everything my standard size laptop does minus a cd disk drive, takes up less space and is much lighter, easy to carry around. The internet speed is fine too. I would recommend it to a friend for sure!!

A great little laptop
Created: 07/05/11
I bought it because it was a great bargain, mainly because it is a very loud pink and this may put some people off buying it.
I am not sure why it came installed with Windows XP. I have an older model that came with Windows 7 installed on it. The processor is 64bit and it will run Windows 64bit if you upgrade the memory to 2gb, from the 1gb it comes with. If you do this, it will run Windows 7 and Office quite competently.
The battery is quite large in this model but, lasts really well on a single charge so, it ideal if you plan to use it on the move, as I do.
I am surprised that people don't buy a netbook & upgrade it, in preference to a larger laptop, for home use. You can plug in a larger monitor and external keyboard / mouse for when you use it at home. But, if you want to take it somewhere, you can unplug it and you have a great little mobile laptop that is light to carry around with you. Netbooks are much more flexible than the newer tablets, in this respect, and much cheaper to buy, especially right now.

Robust and versatile travelling companion

One reviewer has mentioned being unable to find £ sign. I suspect the installation advice to use US English caused this as a US keyboard lacks a £ sign! Irritating having a bluetooth light but no bluetooth. You need a different version such as U130 for that. But I agree with the more favourable reviews that a netbook is much more versatile than a larger laptop. I have small hands so the keyboard is fine. 10" screen is large enough for casual use but I can plug in a larger one if needed. I have a plug-in DVD writer which works better than the one incorporated in my larger laptop. I have machines using both Windows XP and 7 Starter and am happy with the operation of both even with 1GB RAM. I open strings of windows with no apparent adverse consequences. All my netbooks are loaded with my preferred free anti-virus software from AVG which does not seem to slow things down as much as some quite costly ones you can buy. It is always worth asking yourself 'is this the fault of the machine or of what I have loaded on it?' Battery life can easily be enhanced by buying a compatible battery with more cells. Expect to pay £30 to £35. And these little machines are robust - no kid gloves required. So far I have refrained from putting one in my aircraft hold luggage though but I would be interested to know if anyone has tried it. The cold could be an issue. MSI can come badged as Advent but they appear to be very similar in design and spec. Importantly peripherals such as your upgraded battery can be used with either.

Pros and Cons of an average machine.
Created: 12/05/11
Bought this on offer. Good price for £130, but not worth a lot more in my opinion.
Pros: I like XP on a netbook. Good keyboard and trackpad. Quiet fan (although on constantly) keeps the machine very cool. Reflective but vibrant screen.
Cons: Back heavy because of the battery sticking out, not the most stable of netbooks. Fingerprint magnet (top). Good for netsurfing but if attempting to do anything more demanding I have found that it works best plugged into a power source. For example, if watching movies,or iPlayer, when the battery goes under 50%, picture can get choppy and jerky. I imagine skying would be the same.
Claims 7hr battery life, but on wi-fi, this is more like 3-4hrs depending on settings.
All in all, this is perfectly ok machine for a bit of netsurfing and the odd youtube or movie. I find it cant cope with HD720 movies, so there are better netbooks out there (like the Acer D260),than the Msi for watching movies on.
Not sure I'd go for an MSi again, but for the price, this was an ok deal.

Complete waste of money, internet over wifi disconnects after a minute, battery lasts a max of 2 hours, open more than one web page, it freezes, and locks up. Defrag takes about half an hour, with just windows installed, constantly receiving windows update messages, warranty is void if memory is upgraded, which would help performance. Plus points, the charger works, it's got a nice shiny case, it's a compact size. Would make a perfect doorstop for an I.T. geek.
