Review for: Samsung PL211 14.2 MP Digital Camera - Black
In my earlier review I omitted to mention that it's indoor use (and low light performance) is limited by its slow response. If you want to use this indoors with or without flash for capturing children which as a doting grandad is a possible use for me you inevitably miss those fleeting cute smiles. The flash as has been noted by others is glacially slow so for taking shots of fast action it's not suited. Outdoors in strong light it's acceptable. However indoors I'm probably not going to use this much.

Also some further comments on the screen which at 3inches is a big plus but the picture quality is fairly poor with low contrast and less than pin sharp quality which is ok for view finding. However as a photo viewer it's outclassed by most good quality mobile phones which makes all the fancy slide show options that add music and fancy transition effects etc rather redundant. You wouldn't want to use these unless you were on the move and had no other means of showing them and your audience wasn't too discerning.
Similar things could be said about its photo editing capability the screen just isn't good enough to judge if you are making an improvement or not.
For anyone wanting a camera for serious photography it doesn't really fill the bill but for point and shoot outdoor snap shots it is a reasonable step up from a mobile phone. Very definitely a second or third camera when you don't want to carry a bigger or more expensive serious compact camera.

I mainly bought this camera as lightweight snapshot camera I could slip into my pocket and take on walks and the like. I also wanted a lightweight camera with a reasonable zoom for mounting on my rifle and astronomical telescope. It fits the bill admirably taking very acceptable pictures. It doesn't compare with my Panasonic bridge camera for picture quality or for versitility but for the use I wanted to put it to it fits the bill. There are simple to use automodes which are all the average snapper will want though some of the manual programmes are a little gimicky I probably won't be using them or the rather gaudy fancy frame effects. I'd have prefered a panoramic option rather than some of the other trick shot features it does have. It's got quite a range of face detection features like detecting a smile or when the subjects eyes are shut which I'm probably not going to use. The slideshow options are a bit unecessary and rather show the target for this camera is for older children or teenagers rather than a more mature user or one who has asperations as a photographer.

The things I like most are 10X zoom with a reasonable antishake feature, the 3inch screen in my application for scope mounting was key though the poor contrast in sunlight negates this to some degree, and it's got a very reasonable flash for indoor shots. I also wanted a HD video which i haven't tried yet though I'm not expecting great performance. The metal body and build quality give it a robust quality feel.

The things I don't like are the lack of a viewfinder though if you want ultimate compactness and a 3inch screen there's little option. The screen is very difficult to see in bright sunshine so there's some guesswork necessary and having a 3inch screen is not such a bonus as I thought it was going to be. The buttons at the back of the camera use up the space and it's very easy to press them by accident. A mode dial on top would have been better than a push button on the rear but I realise this is a budget camera so there has to be some compromises to keep the cost down.

All in all it's a reasonable snappers camera at a good price. I bought a refurb which at £55 was an absolute snip really. There's a very neat imitation soft leather case for it at around £7 which I'd recommend to protect it.

Review for: Samsung PL211 14.2 MP Digital Camera - Black
This camera can be both delightful and extremely irritating. It only takes the (less common) micro SD cards, so get one before buying this camera to be able to take pictures immediately.
Good bits - excellent zoom which also works with video, build quality, some good picture options, charges while connected to a computer over the usb lead
Bad bits - takes ages to process images, forever to charge the flash, no sports option!, can't adjust shutter or exposure

his is a great camera, well built, sturdy and the image quality is excellent. It uses optical or digital image stabilisation, or both together, take your pick. Use it on full automatic and you'll not be dissapointed in any situation, it even recognises that I've zoomed in close and changes to Macro mode automatically! Want to set it on programmable and you'll find all the setting there from picture size to ISO setting. All the settings are described on screen so you'll never be confused. It's just the right size and feels strong and in no way plasticky due to aliminium body. There's an excellent flash, battery last ages and the back screen is large and good even in bright sunlight, but even this is adjustable. There are more than enough scene settings for any occasion, buy this and you'll not be dissapointed, even if your a professional this camera will suit for keeping in your top pocket for the "Oh, I wish I'd brought my camera" moment we all get. Highly recommended.

Review for: Samsung PL211 14.2 MP Digital Camera - Black
The image quality out of this Camera is really good and the zoom is not too bad either. And the camera size lends itself to being taken everywhere. I cannot believe that they could fit a x10 zoom in to something this small.

However, image processing speed is very slow. If shooting at night with the software and hardware image stabilisation switched on the image takes about 5 seconds to process. So while taking photo of the Olympic Opening Ceremony (with flash switched off) I missed a lot the action because of this. When the flash is used then you have the added wait for it to charge. And you can almost see the battery power going down with each flash image taken as it is very power hungry.

Overall, its good for daylight with both normal and high zoom shots, but very poor at night and high zoom images in low light
