Capture the whole scene in one shot

Created: 08/09/10
I realised when on location in Philadelphia USA that the particular scene I wanted to photograph (An 18th century residential street) was too narrow even for my Sigma 18-200mm superzoom. The available alternatives were either Canon 10-22mm super wide zoom, a Sigma or a Tamron. The Canon is far too expensive and doesn't even come with a hood and the 10-24mm Tamron although slightly cheaper than the Sigma, had poor reviews wherever I searched. So it had to be the Sigma 10-20mm for me. So far I am delighted with my purchase. and I saved a lot of money by buying a used one on ebay. The lens gives me exactly what I was looking for in both quality of image and depth of field. A maximum aperture of f4.0 is more than adequate and the angle of view fits nicely next to my 18-200mm.
A couple of points however to note are that my Cokin P series filter holder causes sever vignetting and the on board flash cannot cover the wide angle so you will need an external flash and circular filters.

Canon 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens

Created: 06/07/10
I wanted a wide angle lens for my Sigma SD14 and with an effective focal length of 17 to 34mm this does the job nicely. At the wide end just remember that there will be distortion at the edges and if the camera is not horizontal those vertical lines converge like crazy. Take advantage of the effect to give images with a whole new perspective on the world!.
Good colour and contrast, my example is sharp but Sigma lenses can vary between examples. For easy use at the wide end, focus at the hyperfocal distance, just over 3 feet and switch off AF, virtually everything will be in focus, simples!
Autofocus is quiet but not too accurate at the wide end (probably the fault of my SD14) build quality is good too. Recommended for photographers who want to go wide.

Sigma ultra-wide angle lens: good value.

Created: 01/04/10
This lens is a good performer at a fair price. Few people use a 10-20 frequently, so this lens fills the bill well. It's quite sharp, quick and quiet focussing, and it's not too big and heavy, so is good for taking on holiday together with an ultra-zoom 'standard' lens to provide a versatile and relative light ensemble. I'm pleased with it, and would recommend it for all but the most demanding amateurs or professional photographers.

Its faults are a bit of barrel distortion and a little bit of colour aberration; it's as good as the equivalent Canon (and cheaper!), but neither fault is an issue unless you want to make large enlargements, serious crops, or use it for architectural studies.

Don't be afraid to buy one!

A very versatile with quality Ultra Wide Angle Lens

Created: 05/12/09
This is the second Sigma lens I have purchased. I find the Sigma brand lenses provide excellent quality and robustness. I needed this lens to take some indoor shots in small rooms and the lens performed brilliantly both indoors and out. It really is my favourite lens. The resulting images are well defined and provide good results without the abstract distortion of a fisheye lens. This lens is great for pulling the central point of the image right into your face and exaggerates distances between objects without looking abstract. If you are looking to purchase a wide lens at an affordable price - this is the one to go for.

bought the Sigma 10 to 20 mm lens for my Canon 450 D primarily for shooting landscapes I had the opportunity to take the lens with me on a recent trip to India. it was well used (I took over 1000 shots) and on the whole performed well. The autofocus is quick and silent I didn't use it much on manual focus much but it seems to work well. my only criticisms are that the lenses is heavy and slightly bulky making caring the camera with the lens more awkward. I also find the zoom difficult to operate. the lens feels solid and well built and comes with a hood which is a bonus. However, the lens hood is difficult to fit.

overall I'm pleased with my purchase and would not hesitate to recommend this Sigma lens.
