minidisc concept
Created: 22/09/10
What a great medium! I can't rate it highly enough! Yes we live in an age of MP3 players etc but to me they all sound crap! especially when played through a micro speaker docking station. call me old fashioned but I still like a hifi system with a room full of big speakers and a sound to match.Great that you can record, over record and move tracks around etc. Shame they never really caught on, but the concept was just that bit too late. I know that DJ's and sound engineers still use MD's so looks as though the discs will be around for a while yet. I have 3 machines whilst using MP3 from my phone in the car only.

Sony MDS-JE520 Mini Disc Player
Created: 24/08/10
Great Mini disk, does just what it says on the packet, good record quality, but you only get out what you put in, if you have crap mics or rubbish players connected then you get what you get, however put quality audio in and you get quality results,.

Typical Sony Quality
Created: 04/01/10
As a Sony officiando (nearly all my hi-fi is Sony) this deck (a JE530, not 520 as it says above) delivers the usual Sony quality and superb sound I have come to expect, even with 'bread and butter' products.
Having a choice of optical and coaxial inputs allows 3 sources when you take the normal analogues into account. There's a optical output as well if needed. Everything works as well as it did when it was new and the sound is great.
I'm mainly using the unit to record from radio, for which it is absolutely brilliant.
Drawbacks? I can think of only one and that's the lack of MDLP as in later decks but that does mean you're not tempted to compromise on recorded sound quality!

MDS-JE520 in the Study
Created: 02/06/07
The MD player does what it says on the tin, but it does have some minor failings, firstly it has a large footprint , about 18" by 12" deep when you include cables, the remote is HUGE 1" deep, width is 2.5" by 8" long, if you don't get a manual then you need to download one in PDF and print it out, sound quality is excellent and it has an optical output, but a portable MZR55 won't record from it, so it's hard to duplicate discs for the car. It does everything I require but is now made obsolete due to iPod and MP3 players, but if you want one to play MD on in a study or similar it's the dogs nuts!
Fits in a niche and fits very well if that's what you want but other better faster smaller alternatives are available now.
