Heartattack and Vine by Tom Waits

First let me confess i didn't buy a waits album until the excellent Alice and Blood Money (both recommended), played them once then put them away somewhere in my collection to gather dust. It was a while later that something made me seek them out (a tune in my head)and play them again, and again ect...Since then i have been hooked and i am currently on a mission to get all his back catalogue, i've never been disapointed. This is the thing with Tom Waits, he may seem hard work at first but give him a chance and you will be richly rewarded with lyrics/melodies that have no equal. So heartattack and vine? my latest waits purchase, well for me he can do no wrong and why not when he can create sublime songs like 'jersey girl' 'on the nickel' and 'ruby's arms' some of the standout tracks on this wonderfull album. All i can say is if you've never tried tom waits just give him a go with this album or one of his many excellent alternative's, you wont be disappointed and it could be the best thing you ever do. steff770

Tom Waits - Heartattack And Vine

I am a dedicated fan.
A very atmospheric recording - although not the best studio production. It ticks most boxes for Waits fans. If you haven't got this album look for it on ebay for a few quid its worth adding to your collection.
Highlights for me ....
Heartattack & Wine - incidental sax at the end (magic).
On the Nickel - another wonderful lullaby - nice orchestration (theme for the movie "On the Nickel" film by Ralph Waite.
Rubys Arms - another great piano ballad - strings supporting.. a favorite of mine.
£3 well spent !

Waits' Golden Years
Created: 06/04/09
Between the directional influence of his manager, Herb Cohen, & the creative influence of his wife, Kathleen Brennan, Tom Waits produced a body of work which was truly Tom Waits. Most critics refer to his 80's trilogy of "Swordfish Trombones", "Rain Dogs", & "Frank's Wild Years" as his benchmark but, for me, the most "Waitsian" albums were "Foreign Affairs", "Blue Valentine" & "Heartbreak And Vine" where he combined his natural singer/songwriter ballads with his affected 50's beat poet persona. Buying this album, along the previous two, completes the cycle.

This is my favourite Tom Waits album. Heartattack and Vine showcases the artists deep gravelly voice but the music is much more blues orientated. Unlike some of TW's other albums it does not feature some of his experimental work. Recommended as an ideal album for first time Wait's fans - you won't be dissapointed

I am a Tom Waits fan and though this is not his best album in my view it is very atmospheric - a bit like Heart of Saturday Night.
