Nothing says devoted fan like collecting items associated with your favourite anime series

The world of anime has captured many of us in the Western world, with its cute drawing style conflicting with sometimes darker stories. Studio Ghibli is where most of us started our anime love affair, presumably after watching My Neighbour Totoro or Ponyo, both of which stole the show when it comes to merchandise.

However, anime isn't just for children, it often attempts to comment on societal issues on top its stunning artwork, which is what art is essentially all about: commenting on something we are currently experiencing. So to celebrate the anime currently out there entertaining and educating us, we have put together a quick guide on the perfect, much loved anime inspired items to keep for yourself or give as a gift below:

1. Ponyo

We all love Ponyo, the little fish who became girl because of her love for a human. Sound familiar? That's because the movie, created by Hayao Miyazaki and Disney, was inspired by Hans Christian Anderson's tale The Little Mermaid.

The film also held an environmentally conscious theme, pointing towards out oceans and the damage we are doing to them. For those who instantly fell in love with adorable little Ponyo pick up this sweet plush mascot to keep close by at home, alongside your scatter cushions or to surprise another like minded fan.

3. My Neighbour Totoro

Totoro shares a special place in many hearts around the world - and would you believe the film was created back in 1988? The adorable story of Mae and her sister Satsuki discovering friendly wood spirits near their home is one of Studio Ghibli's most popular and well known creations.

There are so many options out there when it comes to cute Totoro merchandise but we love this cute Totoro backpack that lets you take the sweet tree spirit everywhere with you. Even this bird loves Totoro:

5. Princess Mononoke

Pick up some of your very own Kodama, from the Princess Mononoke film, and keep them close by to protect your indoor plants from overwatering (or lack of watering).

Kodama are tree spirits that originate from Japanese folklore and are said to inhabit trees, in the film we see them crowding round when the forest is in danger and as the trees start to die falling to the ground and dissolving. Studio Ghibli always appears to tie in an environmentally conscious element into its storytelling to influence children into taking care of the world around them.

6. Fairy Tail

In a world full of magic and wizards and dragons the anime Fairy Tail quickly picked up a loyal fan base after airing. Possibly because its style reminded viewers of their childhood favourites Pokemon and Sailor Moon (where many of us began our anime journey).

Pick up a collection of replica keys from the series, show them off to other fans and summon up your own spirits.

7. Sailor Moon

A firm favourite with girls everywhere, many of the 'hardcore' anime fans might turn their noses up at Sailor Moon but she deserves to be on the list just as much as Death Note or any Studio Ghibli masterpiece.

Similar to Fairy Tail, Sailor Moon is a playful anime that doesn't take itself too seriously, all while dealing with issues we might be familiar with on a day to day basis. In Sailor Moon's case this is everything from passing at school to cute boys - hence why the series is so popular with young girls. Create some moon magic with a little tea friend that keeps you company while enjoying a drink.

8. Bleach

Created by Studio Pierrot and directed by Noriyuki Abe, Bleach follows the story of Ichigo Kurosaki after he obtains the powers of a Soul Reaper and goes on to protect humans from evil spirits. The anime is based on a manga called Tite Kubo and was definitely not created with kids in mind. Featuring lots of fights and creepy characters (as well as Kon the wise cracking mod soul trapped in a soft toy bear) it's best enjoyed by teens and adults. Pick up this Trexi Kon collectable and pop it in pride of place on the bookshelf at home as a little reminder of the show.

10. Arrietty

One real symbol of the Arrietty film, created by Studio Ghibli and based on The Borrowers, is Arrietty's hair clip she uses before heading into the human's home.

You can pick up your very own replica online that actually works as a hair clip and is approved by Studio Ghibli. It might not be the most subtle hair accessory but if Arrietty can pull it off we're sure you can too.
