1. DITCH THE HELIUM

Everyone loves balloons at parties, but having helium balloons are a pain.  You either have to rent a tank and then blow up all of the balloons at home which is really time consuming, or buy your balloons already blown up and hope you get them home without bursting them.  If you love to decorate with balloons as much as I do but don't want to deal with the hassle of helium, blow up a few regular latex balloons and stick them to the wall.  It's a great way to make a statement - especially if paired with a banner - and it only takes a few minutes.

2. RECYCLE MATERIALS YOU ALREADY HAVE AT HOME

Parties are the best place to use materials that you have lying around the house!  Most people have  twine at home and twine can be used for banners and for wrapping around drinks.  I adore the idea of using old fabric scraps for wrapping drinks too.  I bet everyone with kids has a few pairs of ripped jeans laying around that they can repurpose!

3. KNOW YOUR TABLE ETIQUETTE

Knowing your table etiquette can come in really handy when you are setting your table.  How you set the table formally and informally is different (of course), and a breakfast and lunch setting is different as well.  So, if you have a guide handy you won't have to worry about wasting time checking and re-checking if you are not sure.

4. USE DISPOSABLE DINNERWARE

Disposable plates, cups, napkins, forks, spoons and knives are my best friends at parties.  I love that mixing colours and patterns can add interest to the table AND they have a tendency to make my guests feel more comfortable.  Except for formal parties, I LOVE using disposable dinnerware.

5. INCORPORATE A PARTY FAVOUR WITH YOUR TABLE SETTING

I adore incorporating a party favour with my table setting.  Not only does this make the table look better, it gives me one less thing to worry about.  When the party favours are given early in the party, the hostess doesn't have to worry about distributing them at the end of the party or when the first guests start departing.

USE THOSE MASON JARS YOU HAVE PILING UP!

Almost everyone has  mason jars stacking up in their home.  They make the best addition to any party.  You can use them as drinks glasses, centrepiece vases, sweet containers and more.

7. LAYER, LAYER, LAYER

Layering items with 1-2 colours and up to 3 geometric patterns will make your table pop.  I love using paper on my tables because it's easy to tear off and throw away after the party, but fabric is great too.  Consider draping tables with sheets.  You don't have to have fancy table cloths.  Get creative without breaking the bank!

8. PAPER STRAWS WILL SAVE YOU EVERY TIME

Paper straws are my favourite.  They make everything look a little more festive and I love embellishing them with extra flags and even food (like cookies or sweets or fruit)!  You cannot go wrong with paper straws.

Everyone loves to take a fun photo, and   photo props are a great way to get guests to have fun with photos.  Chances are you'll get a few guests to take pictures that normally wouldn't, too.  Leave photo props out and let your guests get creative with how they take their shots.

10. MAKE DRINKS ACCESSIBLE TO YOUR GUESTS

One of my best hostess tips is to make drinks available to guests so that they can serve themselves.  It'll save you a ton of time and stress.  My new favourite way to display drinks is in old crates.  Obviously crates are not waterproof so you'll need to take precautions for melted ice, but they look fabulous and they are easy to move.  The important take away here is that you should allow guests to be able to access drinks at their leisure so that you don't have to serve them when their drinks run low.

Do you have any great hostess hacks?
