Word of warning: if you invite my Mum over to your house, I guarantee she will check out your skirting boards. She told me once that the first thing she notices about a room is how clean the skirting boards are.  I've been admonished a few times for not keeping up on my cleaning duties, namely the skirting boards. My Mum says that you can spend hours cleaning, but if you skip the skirting boards, the room will still look dirty. I guess you know what I'm doing before she comes for a visit!

She's right though. Clean skirting boards can immediately freshen up a room. It's a good thing they aren't hard to clean. Yes, they are a little time consuming and hard on the knees to clean, but the end result is so worth it. Here are 10 easy ways to clean skirting boards - Stacie's Mum approved!

1. Magic Erasers

I remember when  Magic Erasers first were introduced. I thought they were the coolest thing ever. They remove scuffs, stuck-on dirt and also shine up skirting boards to look brand new. They really are like magic! Simply add water to your Magic Eraser and scrub away.

2. Disinfecting Wipes

When I'm feeling lazy, I'll grab a few containers of  disinfecting wipes and use them to clean my skirting boards. Yes, they are wasteful and you'll need a few containers if you do the entire house. But damn it, they work and leave my home smelling great!

3. Dryer sheets

I think it was my Mum that told me about this little trick. If your skirting boards were recently cleaned, run a  dryer sheet along them. It will repel future dust and make your home smell like freshly washed linen! Works like a charm.

4. Vacuum

For the times I don't feel like getting down and dirty with my skirting boards, I simply use my  vacuum cleaner to get the job done. Use an attachment that works to get into those small spaces and you don't even have to bend down. It sucks up the dust and makes them look 100x better than before!

5. Paper Towel and Spray Cleaner

Ah the tried and true method that I was using for years before I discovered new ways to clean my skirting boards. Simply grab a spray bottle of all-purpose cleaner and some paper towel. Either spray the paper towel or the skirting board and wipe. Two things I don't like about this method is that you waste a lot of paper towel and can sometimes spray the wall. It works in a pinch though!

6. Sponge & bucket

This method is the one my Mum uses for her skirting boards. She scoots around the house with a bucket filled with warm water and  Mr. Clean. Lemon fresh is the best! She washes the skirting boards with her dampened sponge and then wipes them dry with a  microfibre towel. Her skirting boards always look impeccable.

7. Vinegar and water

If you prefer a natural, non-chemical way to clean, use old faithful, white vinegar. Is there anything it doesn't clean? I don't think so. Add a few capfuls of vinegar to warm water and get busy with a cleaning cloth or sponge. The smell leaves something to be desired, but your skirting boards will look great!

8. Cotton buds

If you're the type of person who wants to make sure every last nook, cranny and crevice is spotless, I recommend you buy a box of  cotton buds. They are the perfect size to spot clean those hard to reach places on your skirting boards.  It's time consuming, but you'll have the satisfaction of knowing every square inch is perfect.

I use my  Swiffer Wet Jet to clean the vinyl flooring in my home. Did you also know that it cleans skirting boards? Yep, sure does. Again, when I'm feeling lazy and don't want to get down on my hands and knees, I'll simply run my Swiffer Wet Jet along the skirting board. Hey presto!

10. Steam Cleaner

If you are ready for some mega cleaning power, get your  steam cleaner. In the past, I've used mine to clean my oven, microwave and yes, my skirting boards! Dirt and grime is no match for the power of steam!

As you can see, there are many ways to get the same result: clean, fresh and beautiful skirting boards. Many people have added this task to their spring cleaning list and if you have, I encourage you to try one of these 10 methods. Who knows - maybe you'll find a way that works better for you AND makes this boring task a little less painful.
