1. Add Some Sparkle

Guests might not be able to take these favours home, but they’ll love capturing them on camera during the evening.

Fill a bucket with a bunch of sparklers (remember to check whether they’re for indoor or outdoor use, depending on the venue). Attach paper labels with your new surname, little poems or your favourite sayings for a sweet personal touch.

2. Note the Day

Practical wedding favours won't get left behind at the end of the evening – and what's more practical than a good old-fashioned pencil?

Be inspired by wedding blog Your Edmonton Wedding, and personalise pencils with the date of your nuptials to make this essential more special. Plus, guests will be reminded of how much fun they had at your wedding every time they note a new date in their diary.

3. Spin Your Soundtrack

If there’s one thing that evokes memories like nothing else, it’s music. And CDs are so inexpensive now that they make a really fun and affordable option.

Pre-load blank CDs with your wedding playlist and let guests take an album away with them at the end of the evening.

You're guaranteed to make everyone smile if you have included a song request on your invite. Each guest will then have a piece of music that means something to them in between all of your other tracks.

4. Show That You're the Perfect Match

Matches are retro cool and can serve as table decorations, too, if you do them right. Bulk-buy mini boxes of matches and then make your own pretty labels to match your colour scheme.

Match boxes are easy to pop in to pockets, too, so less likely to be left on tables at the end of the evening.

5. Raise a Glass

Anything that makes your wedding budget go further is a no-brainer – and we love this suggestion from wedding planners The Knot.

Save money on catering costs by gifting guests a personalised glass to drink from when they arrive at the reception. They can then take it home as a favour, and you'll avoid hire costs.

Attach labels, buy a tin of chalkboard paint and get creative!

6. Show Your Love for Lavender

Everyone likes sweet-smelling pyjamas, pants and socks. So, little posy bags filled with lavender are guaranteed to go down well. But why not take the favours one step further and ask guests to make their own at the reception?

All you’ll need is dried lavender flowers (which you could buy in bulk and use the rest of for confetti), a few pretty bags, some ribbon and instructions printed on pretty paper.

Not only will the scent of the lavender perfume your wedding room beautifully, it will also keep guests entertained while the photographer snaps away after the ceremony.

7. Do Succulents a Favour

Nobody wants to be gifted something that’s going to be a burden, which some more needy plants can be.

Exquisite-looking succulents take pretty much no care at all and will look great on your tables during dinner, too – as this idea by wedding blog I Take You proves.

Use them as place settings by painting people’s names on the pots and you’ve sorted three things – decorations, place settings and favours – in one streamlined step. Efficient!

8. Light Up the Room

Everybody likes candles, so give the people what they want by presenting them with their very own wax memento from your big day.

If you’re crafty, try this idea by blog MODWedding and make your own jam-jar candles by melting wax pellets into different shaped jars and decorating with tags, labels or string.

A few drops of your favourite essential oil will make this idea your own. Just don’t forget the wicks!

9. Pimp Your Popcorn

Give your guests a little taste of something different by serving up unpopped popcorn kernels as your favours, instead of chocolate or preserves.

If you’ve got a favourite flavour, you could include a little recipe on the tag for serving up the popped kernels once they’re ready.

10. Shower Loved Ones With Flowers

Whether your guests have a garden or not, wild flowers in a pot or on a plot will brighten up the place.

Simply tuck a few packets of meadow seeds in to a brown paper bag and label with some sweet words. Gorgeous!

11. Pop a Bottle

Bottle openers are another inexpensive extra that can be tucked into pockets or purses – and used time and again.

Attach to the neck of beer and cider bottles, then place the bottles in an ice bucket so that guests can help themselves.
