Just when you thought you had a handle on the cleaning and were on top of your game a new list emerged with items that you use all the time but probably never clean. At least, that's what happened to me. Don't feel too badly though, most people forget to clean these items. That's why they are on the list. Now that you know about them though, you might as well clean them, right? Here are 15 Things You Never Thought of Cleaning, But Should! You'll be glad you did.
1. YOUR COMPUTER KEYBOARD
I don't know about your computer keyboards, but my computer keyboards are well used. Like, well, well used. I actually use a plastic protector on my laptop that I can take off and wash with antibacterial wipes (super handy), but my desktop keyboard that my kids use? That's a whole different story. The best way to clean a keyboard is to unplug it if it isn't wireless and then turn it upside down. This will shake out any crumbs that may be lurking around. If there is anything left hanging around between the keys, you can use compressed air to flush it out. Next, rub a soft bristled toothbrush dipped in rubbing alcohol on the keys to remove dirt. Use a soft cotton cloth to wipe it clean.
2. YOUR HAIR BRUSH
Who knew that you need to do more than clean out the hair stuck in your hair brush! Actually, your hair brush should be cleaned about once a month to get rid of the buildup of hair products, dirt, oil, and other stuff that collects there! ECK. Just fill your sink with warm water and then add a few drops of shampoo. Swirl the brush around in the water and then rinse and dry.
3. YOUR KID'S TOYS
Your kid's toys absolutely need to be cleaned too, especially the ones that don't look dirty! Always look at the manufacturer's directions, but many times you can put the toys in a garment bag (you know, the type you use to wash your delicate garments) and wash right in the washing machine.
4. YOUR TOOTHBRUSH
Your toothbrush and the toothbrush holder are often overlooked when it comes to cleaning. Toothbrushes should be replaced when the bristles start to fray but did you know you should sanitise your toothbrush when you've been sick? Run it through the dishwasher to get it clean and don't forget the holder!
5. YOUR BIN
Bins can get pretty nasty, even when you use liners. It's a good idea to clean your bin periodically to make sure there isn't any weird bacteria growth and to keep smells in check. The proper method for cleaning bins is this: grab a long handled scrub brush and clean thoroughly, rinse and let dry.
7. YOUR WASHING MACHINE
Washing machines are also frequently forgotten when it comes to regular cleanings but in order to combat those odour causing residues that can linger in your machine, run your wash cycle once a month. You can buy specialty cleaners like Affresh Washing Machine Cleaner or Tide Washing Machine Cleaner to easily clean your machine with no hassle.
8. YOUR STEERING WHEEL
When you think about how often you touch your steering wheel without washing it, it's pretty astounding. If you have a leather wrapped wheel, you can purchase disposable leather cleaning wipes and use them to wipe down your wheel frequently! YES!
12. DOOR KNOBS
It's always a good idea to wipe down your door knobs with a good cleaning solution to help impede germs. Disposable anti-bacterial wipes also work great.
13. YOUR CREDIT CARDS
I would have never thought of cleaning my credit cards until someone pointed it out to me, but it makes perfect sense. Strangers routinely handle my cards and I have no idea what they've touched or where they've been, and then I touch my cards. So, it's smart to clean your cards. It's easy to wipe them down with anti-bacterial wipes.
14. HEATER AND AIR VENTS
Dirty heater and air vents can circulate dust and mould and other junk that we don't even want to think about. Clean them once a month with your vacuum for cleaner air.
Even though almost everyone keeps pillow cases on their pillows to keep them clean and fresh, it's a great idea to run pillows through the wash cycle on hot every few months or every year. You'd be surprised how much dirt your pillow actually gets under the pillow case!
