There you were, thinking you’d done all the hard work by sorting your party season wardrobe. Think again! Your underwear situation is just as important. Especially if you’re a curvy girl…

No matter how incredible your outfit is, terrible underwear can ruin even the most put-together look and undermine an incredible figure too. That brand new LBD with the sheer neckline deserves something so much better than an ancient bra with thick straps and a sad grey tinge. And no matter how nice your new pink bra is, a big ol’ bra strap across the middle of the back will ruin the sultry vibe of a backless dress.

Curves need a little more support and attention when it comes to underwear. If you skip this important stage, your confidence will plummet as fast as your boobs. It’s also super uncomfortable not to wear shapewear! Who wants to spend the night sucking in their tummy when a brilliantly crafted pair of knickers can do that job for you instead?

If you’ve forgotten to give your curves a helping hand underneath your sparkles, fear not. We’ve got the best tips, tricks and must-buys to help you feel a million dollars this party season. We’ve even divided them up into tricky dress styles to make things super easy. Because we’re nice like that.

1. Under a Bodycon Dress

Thankfully there are now a multitude of ways to disguise lumps and bumps under even the tightest of frocks.

If you’re self conscious about your tummy and upper thighs, then knee length contouring shorts are for you. The front panel will flatten the stomach without causing you discomfort or grief, and hips get smoothed and thighs sucked and trimmed.

For the ultimate in bodycon body maintenance, try a shapewear slip. Breasts get a welcome boost, tummies are flattened and the hip and thigh area is smoothed. It’s an all-round win. Slips are specially good under satin or silk to create a bump-free finish.

2. Under Backless Tops and Dresses

One of the sexiest ways to flash party skin, the backless dress is a favourite of celebrities and designers alike. Once you’ve gone to the trouble of scrubbing, moisturising and fake tanning your bod, it would be a shame to ruin the look with a giant bra strap.

That said, a generous bust without a good bra can be a recipe for disaster. Your puppies need support, and don’t ever think it’s okay to leave the house without a bra if you’re packing anything over a B cup.

A multi-way bra is a must, no matter what your size. Pick up a pretty plus-sized number with a low back, then slip the straps into a halter neck position.

Stick on cups are another option, but should only be attempted on breasts up to a C cup. Anything bigger needs a little more hoist. Make like Kim Kardashian and invest in some strong stylist’s tape. Use the lengths of tape to create a bra-like shape, but a word of warning: Removal may result in a few yelps…

3. Under a Plunging Neckline

When picking a dress with a plunging neckline, just one word of warning: Avoid a super-deep plunge. Anything lower than the breastbone on anyone other than a Victoria’s Secret model can look terribly trashy.

Brands such as Wonderbra and Ultimo have created plunge bras and body shapers designed to give the wearer support, without showing even the tiniest hint of bra. It can be our secret.

If your boobs are perky, grab a pair of pasties to protect from any potential nipple escapes. If it’s chilly, pasties will also help hide any obvious, ahem, chills.

Got a cute mini dress you want to rock without worry? Why not slip on a pair of shaping tights? There are a wide variety of body-flattering opaques available, ones to slim hips, flatten tummies, perk up bums and smooth legs, all the while hiding any goosey winter flesh. Win, win.

5. Under a Fit ’n’ Flare Dress

If you’re a big fan of a retro-feel rockabilly dress, you’ll know the shape of those frocks already does a lot to flatter curvy bods. But for extra sculpting points, why not try a celebrity-approved waist cincher – a half corset that slims the middle without affecting other areas of the figure.

There are also lots of waist shaping bodies without a bust area – perfect if you want to wear one with your own trusty brassiere.
