Underwear might not seem like the most original gift idea, but it’s one that’ll always win you brownie points. Because high-end lingerie is something all women love, but rarely buy for themselves. In the run-up to last Christmas, even David Beckham was spotted buying lingerie sets for Victoria in Harrods’ underwear department.

Want to buy your partner some lingerie this Christmas? Here are 5 lingerie brands we think will go down a storm with your partner.

Agent Provocateur

Founded by Vivienne Westwood’s son Joseph Corré and his then-wife Serena Rees, Agent Provocateur is the brand that reinvented sexy lingerie for the new millennium.

You can’t go wrong with it – the fit and quality are great, and it’s one of the few underwear brands to make large-sized bras as sexy as the smaller ones.

Ann Summers

Known for its raunchy, decadent lingerie (and sex toys), Ann Summers is the place to go if you're looking to buy sexy underwear (although the firm also runs the Knickerbox brand, which is a little more conservative).

The firm has been running since the 1970s and today sells a variety of lingerie products, from bras to knickers to corsets, babydolls and basques.

Top tips for buying lingerie

1. Always get the size right
Buy something too large and she’ll be insulted; buy it too small and she’ll think you’re not paying attention. But whatever you do, don’t ask her size or you’ll give the game away. The trick is to go through her underwear drawer when she’s not looking, and check the tags on the pieces she wears most.

2. Sexy underwear is great, but don’t go too sexy
She’ll want something she can actually wear. Don’t buy her anything she’d be embarrassed to be seen in at the gym.

3. Likewise, don’t go too practical
Yes, she wants a pair of Spanx, but she doesn’t want them from you.
