Among the most versatile and progressive sneakers of its time, the Air Jordan 4 vocalises everything great about the era it so gracefully represents. Originally debuting in 1989, it was the first Jordan release to reach a global market, venturing outside the US in what, at the time, was unheard of. It did so by picking up where the 1988 release of the Air Jordan 3 left off. Aesthetically pleasing with visible Air, padded collar and uniquely designed lace locks and heel tab, the Air Jordan 4 was slimmed considerably in relation to its predecessors. Ultimately, the 4's were a big deal. And, they helped set the stage for all we experience in sneaker culture today.

That said, we look back at the Air Jordan 4 and its five greatest colorways. From our standpoint, many of the best Jordan 4's are original colorways produced with the first run of the shoe. Now, that's no shade to the many new colorways, because a wide variety of those are great in their own right. However, though, they just can't crack the top five. Check out the list below and let us know what you think.

Air Jordan 4 "Oreo"

It's with little doubt that the return of the  Air Jordan IV “Oreo” is one of the biggest sneaker releases thus far in 2015. First released back in 1999 – and not again until last month – Jordan may have never worn the blacked out kicks on court, buy they certainly resonate as one of the best IV's that collectors have been itching to get their hands on for the last decade and a half.

Air Jordan 4 "Fire Red"

MJ wore the  “Fire Red” IV's often in 1989 as they were the perfect ode to the Bulls home uniforms. The shoe has taken on many forms since then, most notably in 2006 when they were laced with Mars Blackmon at the heel. Some rank these as high as number one on their list – a stature in which we take no offense.

Air Jordan 4 "Undefeated"

Who knew 72 pairs of sneakers could have such a profound impact on sneaker culture and the way collaborations would take shape for years to come. Hundreds of brand collabs have run the table since the UNDFTD IV's in 2005, but very few garnered as much success or hold a true place in time as a cultural transcendent work of art.

Air Jordan 4 "White Cement"

For all intents and purposes, the  “White Cement” IV's are the perfect shoe. The colours blend to perfection, the style itself is unparallelled, and from a cultural standpoint, few Jordan's were as visible commercially than this shoe in the late 80's and early 90's. This is a shoe that should be in everyone's collection. They are certainly in ours.

Air Jordan 4 "Bred"

There are perfect shoes and then there's “the perfect shoe.” The  “Bred” IV's are the latter. Nothing quite compares to this shoe (unless of course you consider the Air Jordan III of the same moniker). Everything about them is money. The black nubuck, grey midsole, red Jumpman. There are also the achievements MJ mounted in the iconic colorway. “The Shot” in the '89 Playoffs, a scoring title and much more, Jordan made sure the shoe was revered not only for its uncompromising style, but its irreplaceable memories in basketball history.
