Thanks to shows like Fixer Upper, the term “Modern Farmhouse” has become a household term and we have happily embraced this lived-in casual look. Luckily, it is a style that is as easy to obtain as it is to maintain (distressed and imperfect are trademarks of this style!). Try any of these 5 easy steps to get the Modern Farmhouse look in your own home:

Step #1: Install Shiplap

Adding shiplap siding to your walls might be one of the easiest, yet high-impact DIY tricks you can do to achieve this Modern Farmhouse style. For the purist, use  reclaimed wood or barn siding to get this look. Or use simple  wood planks (typically cut 6”-10” high). Install horizontally, fastening the wood planks to your wall, leaving a small gap in between each plank. Then paint any shade of white for an instant farmhouse classic.

Step #2: Keep the Décor Neutral

The Modern Farmhouse style dictates a neutral palette full of whites, creams, tans, greys, and black. To keep the look from getting boring, mix things up with different patterns and textures. A  seagrass rug adds texture, or stick with a simple grey or black striped rug. Keep your room interesting while sticking to neutrals by adding natural touches, like a vintage  tobacco basket or half windmill, to your walls as instant focal points.

Step #3: Mix in Metals to Keep it Modern

The key to keeping the look from going too country, is to mix in some modern metals along the way. Try using a  wire basket for extra storage, or a modern take on a  farmhouse metal stool. The finishing touch to any Modern Farmhouse room is an  industrial inspired light fixture that brings a modern edge to the space.

Step #4: But don’t forget the “Farmhouse” in “Modern Farmhouse”Part of the fun of the Modern Farmhouse style is embracing a bit of the county that goes along with it! Try a grain sack pattern on a pillow or runner, or even a headboard, for a look that is both country and modern at the same time.  Or try using a  feedsack pillow for a bit of whimsy in any room. A little goes a long way, so stick to one or two touches of this in your room.

Step #5: Rustic Woods are a Must

For a dining room or office, try a  trestle-style table or find a table with turned legs, either in a rustic wood or a distressed painted finish. Finish the look with the classic Windsor farmhouse-style chair or even mix in some upholstered wing backs. In a family room, look for a  side table with metal accents or a reclaimed look (real or faux).

Mix and match family heirlooms, vintage pieces, and brand new finds to create a Modern Farmhouse look that is all your own!
