Goose down coat

When the temperatures really start to drop, you’ll need something to protect you from the elements. But opting for a practical winter jacket doesn’t mean you have to forego style. Outdoor clothing manufacturers have upped their game and, when it comes to heavy-duty winter coats, there are now some impeccably stylish options out there.

Moncler is a French-Italian brand that dates back to 1952. Back then it kitted out the Swiss Olympic ski team, but these days you’re more likely to see it on the likes of Madonna, Reese Witherspoon and Katie Holmes. Other performance brands to keep an eye out for include Penfield, a Massachusetts brand popular with urban hipsters. Canada Goose, meanwhile, makes stylish – if expensive – extreme weather wear that’ll see you through the coldest of frosts. And if your budget won’t stretch to those three, there’s always good old Uniqlo.

Wool beanie

A wool beanie is a stylish winter warmer for both men and women. Team it with a parka or leather jacket for chic off-duty dressing.

Beanies aren’t hard to get hold of and come in at a range of price points. Try Rick Owens or Scotch & Soda for a designer look, or ASOS or Zara for more democratically priced versions.

Blanket scarf

Looking for a winter scarf? This season it’s all about thinking big. The poncho-style blanket scarf has been a huge hit, with SJP, Rosie Huntington-Whitely and Cara Delevigne just three of the celebs seen stepping out in Burberry’s monogrammed version. But given that these retail at a cool £900, you might want to look for an alternative.

The other brand of the season is Shrimps, whose brightly coloured faux-fur coats, scarves and bags have been seen on everyone from Alexa Chung to Net-a-Porter’s Natalie Massanet. Or check out Helen Moore, whose Multi Vixen scarf has also been seen wrapped around the necks of those who know.

Duck boots

Never mind winter clothes, in the UK, where it rains at least one day in three, practical winter shoes are a must. Rubber wellies are great for keeping the water out, but can be chilly when the temperature’s down to freezing.

One solution is a pair of  duck boots. Fleece-lined for cosiness, these lace-up boots have a rubberised sole base that will keep the rain out. You can buy them from shops like J Crew in a huge range of colours, making them ideal for dog walking in style.

Cashmere sweater

For comfort and all-round cosiness, there’s nothing like a cashmere jumper. Both men and women can simply throw one over a pair of jeans for a look that’s effortlessly chic. These days cashmere is more accessible than ever, with high-street brands like M&S and Uniqlo making versions that hold their own against more expensive labels.

But, as with everything in life, you get what you pay for and the softer wools often come with a heftier price tag. If you’re looking for something special that’ll see you through the next few winters, try classic names like Ballantyne or Johnstons of Elgin.
