Toy drives, a fun way to make a child's Christmas

Every year I check off the kids Christmas lists trying to get what I can, excited to see the kids' faces when they open their gifts Christmas morning.  This time of year, I can't help but think about the families struggling out there that have so much to worry about.  Some don't even know how they're going to put food on the table.  Christmas, while exciting for some can be a real struggle for others.  I know toys and gifts aren't what Christmas is about, but giving a struggling family something to smile about could sure give a family a much needed moment of joy.  Buying a little baby doll or a  toy truck won't ruin our budget but it will definitely make someone's Christmas a little better.

We set aside a small budget and buy one new toy for a girl, a boy, and toddler.  I take my kids with me and let them help me pick the toys out.  They know that they don't get anything for themselves on this trip.  We discuss the true meaning for Christmas and why we should be grateful for what we have.  We don't spend a lot, but giving back and teaching my kids about compassion is important to me.

But when you don't have a lot to spend, what toys are good suggestions?  Remember most toy collections ask for NEW unwrapped toys.

Baby Dolls

Baby Dolls are fun toys for all ages.  I bought my 20 month old daughter her first baby doll.  I remember playing with baby dolls until I was at least 7 or 8 years old.   American Girl dolls are a big deal but who can really afford to buy American Girl dolls for a donation?  There are many other 18 inch dolls that are similar to American Girl dolls like   Our Generation dolls that you can find right here on eBay.  The unbranded dolls are MUCH more affordable than the American Girls dolls. The big deal about these dolls is you can buy lots of outfits for the 18 inch dolls.  So if you're feeling extra charitable you can even grab an 18 inch doll outfit or two. They'll fit any brand 18 inch doll.

Big Trucks

I would say, "What little boy doesn't like  big trucks" but my daughter loves playing with cars and trucks just as much as my youngest son does.   If you're get one toy to donate, this would be a good choice.   Green toys dump trucks  are plastic, built-well, come in different colours, are environmentally friendly and are reasonably priced.

Bouncy Balls

What kids doesn't love to play with a big colour bouncy ball?  I mean seriously, I love playing with a bouncy ball.  They have cool ones now too, some that light up, some that have glitter or other floating objects in them, all kinds.  Ball's with popular characters on them like Spiderman and Doc McStuffins  are always good too!   Footballs, or basketballs are great for all ages, even the older kids.   If you have a small budget this could be the toy donation for you.  Anywhere from £1 or £2 and up!

As Seen on TV

If you've been around kids whilst they watch TV you'll know that they'll ask for just about everything that they see, especially this time of year. My kids have asked me for the Wubble Bubble, Hover Ball, and other toys that I can't remember the name of.  I listen to my niece say the same things to her mom.

Craft and Science Kits for Kids

There are lots of different kinds of craft and  science kits out there for kids now.  They  have them labeled for appropriate ages.  You can find everything from mosaic tiling, to junior chemistry kits.  These are great for several reasons: you can find kits to fit your charity budget, you can find them for all ages including the older kids, and many can be for either boys or girls.   Dr. Cool science kits are fun. We've tried some ourselves.

Popular Character Toys

Right now, anything with Doc McStuffins, Spiderman, Batman, Disney characters, Lalaloopsy, and many more.  Some suggestions might be the Doc McStuffins doctor bag, a  Lalaloopsy playset  or doll,  LEGO junior batcave, or really any LEGO set.  Oh and don't forget Disney's Frozen toys, oh my goodness no those are huge this year.

Things To Think About

If you want to buy a toy that has batteries, consider buying the batteries it needs.  I also just wanted to mention this as food for thought.  I had the opportunity to visit a Toys collection one Christmas.  I can tell you there were LOTS of the small penny counter toys.  The kids usually go straight for the big toys . If there children get toys at all at home it's usually the penny counter toys.

Also toys that require connecting to a computer might not be a good choice either as the families may not have that access at home.
