Shopping can really suck. Being in that dreaded dressing room full of mirrors that reflect all of that junk in the trunk from all kinds of crazy angles in really unflattering light and then trying to squeeze into someone's insane idea of a size XL is NOT my idea of a good time. I cannot tell you how many times I've walked into a dressing room feeling confident and hot, and walked out of a dressing room feeling bad about myself. The good news is, after years of rocking an amazing wardrobe with my serious curves, I've discovered the brands, the silhouettes and fabrics that make me look and feel confident and sexy, and now I'm going to share those tips with you! So here goes--and if you want even more ideas, check out the My Bohemian Closet collection!
The Harem Trouser
Harem trousers have been huge in other parts of the world forever. I started rocking Harem pants when I lived in Italy. European women seem to have adopted the trend more quickly than ladies in the US–but now that I feel comfortable in the harem trouser style, it’s truly one of my favourite silhouettes–they look fashion forward, they’re unbelievably comfy and they can easily be dressed up or down. I'd opt for an all black harem trouser to start out with--they are timeless and elegant! And if they have an elastic waistline like these do, all the better, yes?
The wrap-around skirt
Ahh the wrap around skirt... it's the gift that keeps on giving, even if you gain or lose a couple. I have about 5 of these vintage wrap arounds and I wear them year round with leggings underneath in the winter, and little boy-shorts underneath in the summer (‘cuz sometimes when the wind blows, you flash passersby). Beautifully boho, soft and in great patterns, these ’70′s yum yums are also the perfect thing to bring with you when heading on a holiday. And when I was pregnant and even rounder than I normally am, I would even tie two wrap-around skirts together for extra coverage!
Oh dear kaftan, where would I be without you? Belted or loose, crocheted or cotton, I love how kaftans loosely drape over my body. Kaftans are hands down the most comfy thing to wear, and I rock them with heels and a chunky necklace to a gallery opening and I rock them to the beach. Get a kaftan with a nice deep V-neck to show just a hint of cleavage, and they can even be perfect for a dinner date, too!
So, I love Madewell jeans and Free People has some seriously cute jeans too and MOST styles don't fit me, but some of the stretch models do fit, and they look pretty darn sexy, too. When I wear jeans, I find that wide leg and flare styles, worn with a platform shoe (anything that gives a bit of height) elongates the leg and makes my bum look cute too ;)
Jumpsuits are my favourite thing because they are no fuss. It’s just one thing to throw on and you are all ready to go. I especially love jumpsuits with elastic waists – they tend to flatter my hourglass shape. Also, they make me feel like a ’70′s disco queen–which is rad.
The Peasant Blouse
I love a peasant blouse / dress. They can be dressed up or down, they are easy-going comfy and have a great flow (especially when they are linen or 100% cotton). Wear the tops with a simple pair of jeans, or the flowy dresses with a simple sandal. Add a chunky statement necklace, a cute cropped jacket and a great, punchy bag to complete the look.
