How is it some people look effortlessly stylish all the time, yet when we post selfies on social media, we just look like we’ve got an attitude problem and way too much time on our hands?

We asked our favourite curvy fashion and beauty bloggers for their tips on looking great on Instagram. They must be doing something right – between them, they have hundreds of thousands of dedicated followers…

1. Accentuate Your Eyes

‘If you're going to be wearing make-up, I suggest making a feature of your eyes as they really draw the viewer in and can convey the emotion behind the image. I love to wear false lashes to really accentuate and open up my eyes. My favourites are from Esqido.’

2. Find Your Perfect Light

‘My top tip for Instagram is when taking selfies, try and find your light. I like to stand in front of a window and make the most of the natural light – it’s guaranteed to make your eyes pop and your skin glow!’

3. Avoid Too Much Clutter

‘Taking photos for Instagram is a lot different to taking photos for pretty much anything else. Photography has been my passion for more than a decade now, but I've had to adapt to a different style for Instagram. It's very important to leave white or light neutral space, because that makes your gallery look a lot more cohesive. I also avoid posting photos which are super busy, because they end up making my page look cluttered.’

‘My secret is… balance! Food photos, selfies, photo shoots, workouts, pet rats... my life is a mixture of things, just like anyone's. People can relate to you more if you show that you're not corseted, false-lashed and hair-sprayed up 24/7.’

‘Filters are great, but I rarely use them. I want people to see the real me and for the true colour and finish of my make-up to show. Unless the lighting in my image is particularly poor, I tend not to edit them, either.’

‘Always flash your best smile, as this really radiates and draws people in. I get so many comments on my smile and how infectiously happy I always look in my Insta pictures, and it's really nice. I'd definitely say it's my best feature. So give it your best cheesy grin and don't forget to highlight it with a bangin' lippy! I love the NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks. My ultimate favourite shade of theirs is Pink Lust.’

‘I try and use a select few filters for Instagram, as this adds to the cohesiveness of my gallery. I also pre-edit pictures using a couple of different apps. Camera 360, VSCO and A Color Story are my favourites.’
