1. The Party Dress

We’ve all been there – finding fashionable-but-flattering party looks at the last minute isn’t fun, but we’re pretty sure we’ve found the answer in the cape dress. From classic black and navy to lighter nude versions – this is one foolproof style that never dates and looks good on pretty much everybody. Plus, it works in all seasons, which is always a bonus.

Prep your legs with a little fake tan, but keep your upper half cosy and covered on those nights when the weather is as bonkers as that weird lecturer you’ve been lumped with. We’d like one in every colour please.

2. The Statement Tee

Making friends at uni can be the best – and worst – part of Fresher’s Week. Update your play-it-safe look with a fun statement Tee – and show your classmates what you’re all about at the same time. Whether you head into lectures in a retro band T-shirt (think Rolling Stones or The Beatles), or prefer rocking an ’80s-style Kangol or adidas look, it’ll mean your clothes are doing the talking so you don’t have to. Phew!

3. The Pub Throw-On

Who doesn’t love a chunky cream knit? The perfect solution to those last-minute 'pub?' texts from your housemates. Knowing try-hard is a no-go at uni, this is the answer to all your fashion prayers and the bonus is that cream flatters all skin tones. Throw a chunky jumper over a pair of boyfriend jeans or leggings to instantly update your look in the cosiest, chicest way possible. Just remember to wash it very carefully on a cool wash – teeny-tiny Barbie-sized jumpers are not where we’re going with this one….

4. The Slouchy Scarf

Is it a scarf? Is it a shawl? Who cares – it’s about to become your new fashion BFF. A slouchy scarf is perfect for those chilly winter evenings when you can’t face leaving your dorm – just throw on nonchalantly over your outfit to stay toasty and chic. If your wardrobe is already made up entirely of blacks and greys (that’s pretty much all of us, then) go for a patterned, brighter number to mix it up. Or play safe with a cream, brown or grey – and feel smug in the knowledge that you’ve just found yourself one hell of an investment piece.

5. The Campus Trainers

You’ve lugged a shoe rack full of your highest, strappiest sandals to uni, but the reality is you’ll probably be living in comfy trainers. And, with all that trekking from halls to campus (and, er, parties), you’ll be glad those stilettos aren’t on your feet 24/7. So, what’s the freshers’ footwear of choice right now? A pair of adidas Gazelles. Available in pretty much every colour from sensible black to the cutest pale pastels, it’s the style that suits everyone. Their simplicity makes them a winner – throw on with anything in your wardrobe to add an instant update and a fun, sporty touch. Plus, the low cut makes ankles look super-slim and dainty. Winner.

6. The Statement Satchel

If your grades aren’t impressing your new mates at uni, a chic satchel will have to do the job instead. Go for a slouchy, soft-feel number and the odd spill or scrape in the union bar won’t matter – in fact, it’ll only make it look cooler. Just make sure it’s big enough for your books and, who knows, maybe the parents will even offer to contribute if it’s a study essential, right?

Look for a satchel with adjustable straps to suit your height and be sure to check the dimensions first, too. This style of bag can look roomier than it actually is. Opt for of-the-moment chestnut, tan and navy; these shades are much more exciting than black!

7. The Army Jacket

If there’s one thing we can’t rely on in Blighty, it’s the weather, so pre-empt all eventualities with a military-style, oversized army jacket. Practical (thanks to all those pockets) and painfully cool, this is an investment piece if ever we saw one. Team with cute teadresses, chunky tights and biker boots to add an urban edge to your day-to-day lecture look, or layer over your snuggly jumper, skinny jeans and Gazelles to give a nod to ’90s grunge. Vintage or new? It’s your call, just make sure you nab one quick as they’re about to become huge.
