One of the freshest cleanest scents there is is the scent of a freshly peeled orange. It can help naturally brighten your mood and make you feel invigorated. In addition, one of the surprising benefits of orange essential oil and orange peel, which naturally contain some of this oil, is the cleaning properties it has.

Orange essential oil is a natural de-greaser, making it an important tool in your cleaning product arsenal and since it actually smells great all the better! Below I've listed 7 different uses for orange peels or orange essential oil throughout your home, for cleaning and deodorising.
You can get more tips for  cleaning and freshening your waste disposal here.

2. Homemade All Purpose Cleaner

You can kick up the effectiveness of your all purpose cleaner by adding orange essential oil to it. To make a very simple cleaning spray mix together: Pour this mixture into a spray bottle and simply spritz onto counters or other hard surfaces as needed.  Clean with one microfibre cloth and then use a second damp cloth to rinse off the orange scented cleaner.

3. Citrus Cleaning Vinegar

Vinegar is a great cleaner for many things in your home. When you add the power of orange oil to it though, it is even more remarkable. To make your own citrus cleaning vinegar simply take your orange peels and put them into a re-sealable container, like a mason jar, filled with vinegar and let them soak for at least a week, perhaps two. Every few days while the peels are soaking in the vinegar shake the container gently, and once you're ready to use the mixture strain the peels from the vinegar. Then, use this citrus cleaning vinegar as you would in any other  homemade cleaning recipe, but it will be an even better de-greaser, and not smell quite as vinegary.

4. Homemade Furniture Polish

You can also make a citrus scented homemade furniture polish that works quite well. Combine 3 parts  olive oil to 1 part lemon juice (or you can substitute vinegar for the lemon juice), and then add several drops of orange essential oil. Place the mixture into a spray bottle and shake up, and then spray a small amount onto a microfibre cloth and use this to polish your wood furniture. Then, use a clean microfibre cloth to buff the wood.

5. Add Scent To Homemade Laundry Products

If you make your own laundry products, such as homemade detergent or fabric softener (such as this  DIY fabric softener crystals recipe using epsom salts), you can add some scent to these products, and one of the most pleasant scents is citrus. One of the best citrus blends is equal parts sweet orange essential oil and lemon essential oil. If you'd like to add some floral scent along with the citrus, you can also add some lavender essential oil into the mix.

6. Christmassy Room Scent

As I mentioned, oranges have a wonderful scent, and one of my favourite ways to use them is in this christmas recipe.
  • Add 2 sliced oranges
  • 1 cup of cranberries
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon of whole cloves into a pot
  • 3 cups of water
Simmer on low, You could alternatively place all of these ingredients in your slow cooker, leaving the top off. The scents that will come from this simmering liquid are absolutely heavenly, and they will fill your kitchen and whole house, making it smell like Christmas at any time of year.

7. Homemade Foaming Hand Soap

Finally, you can add a very small amount of orange essential oil to your homemade foaming hand soap. This citrus scent will help cut other odours from your hands once you wash them, such as if you've recently cut an onion, or prepared fish, for example. To make your own homemade foaming hand soap fill a foaming hand soap dispenser mostly full with water, and then add a tablespoon of dish soap (again, I suggest unscented soap, so the light scent of citrus shines through). Shake gently to mix, and then add 10 drops of sweet orange essential oil, and again gently shake to mix thoroughly. Then, use this foaming hand soap the same as you would any other.
