Whether you love or hate your job, make sure your desk is somewhere you are happy!

You spend the majority of each day glued to your desk, around 8 hours on average, more time than you spend in many other places, possibly including your bed!
You transform your bedroom or your home into a space that you enjoy being, so if you are spending an equal amount of time at your desk this should also be a place that makes you feel happy. It is particularly important because this is a space you are going to use to excel and progress, and a happy worker is a more productive worker. So encourage this by making some or all of the following changes.

Make the Space Yours

We all know office workers go through countless mugs of tea a day, so why not bring in your own. You could also take in a glass for your water, because you can’t just drink tea all day! Whether this is personalised , novelty or just your favourite pattern, it will reflect your personality and mean you don’t have to fight your colleagues for a mug from the kitchen each day. Similarly, bring in your own pen pot and stationery. If you are a girly girl write with a pink fluffy pen (although it's probably advisable to leave it on your desk when you go into a meeting with the big boss!) Anything you can add to make the space feel more you, without cluttering it up too much, of course, will instantly make you feel happier.

Treat Yourself!

Place a treat tin on your desk and fill it with sweets, chocolate or biscuits. There is nothing worse than a rumbling tummy with hours to go before the end of your working day, plus you need something to dunk in all the tea you are drinking. You will also be popular amongst your colleagues when you hand out tasty treats, or you could use them as incentives to enjoy after you have completed a piece of work. What better way to reward yourself for all your hard work than by satisfying your sweet tooth!

Picture the Scene!

Whether you place a framed photo of your partner, a family member, or your pet dog on your desk, thinking of loved ones will help ease stress and negative thoughts. Likewise, changing your computer wallpaper to either your favourite photo, perhaps a memory from your last holiday, or just an image that you love, will ensure you smile when you switch between the many documents you have open. You could also add a print adorned with a motivational quote to your desk décor, ideal to keep you going, particularly if you are having a bad day.

Flower Power!

Apparently the colour green can make you more creative and plants around the office boost productivity and concentration. Theories on why plants are beneficial suggest that a green office will make employees more physically, cognitively and emotionally involved in their work. Plus they look pretty, so what more of an incentive do you need to pick up a beautiful vase? If you think you will be too busy to change the flowers or remember to water the plant, opt for artificial flowers or an easy-to-care-for cactus, because a wilting carnation is definitely not going to make you happy.

Listen While You Work

What could make you feel happier than your favourite song playing in the background as you work. It has been suggested that listening to different genres of music will help with your work in varying ways. Music can both lift your mood and relax you, and there is nothing worse than a silent office with merely the sound of keys typing and mice clicking. If the office radio is playing out rock-anthems and you are in the mood for a bit of Reggae, pop in your headphones, because you are bound to be happier listening to a song you love. If you want to shut out all office noise for a while for complete concentration, noise-cancelling headphones are the best option.

You Sitting Comfortably?

It is unlikely that you will choose your office chair, but there are ways to make it so comfortable you will want to spend more than 8 hours sat there.
First of all it is important, not just for comfort, but also to reduce the harm caused by sitting at a desk all day, to adjust your chair and monitor. Your monitor or laptop should be at eye level, you can set up a stand to lift this. Your feet should be fully supported, use a footrest to help with this if needs be. Finally, a cushion can be placed on the chair to add comfort where it is needed, whether this is under your bum, behind your lower back or across your shoulders. Also, don’t forget to get up regularly from your desk, and walk around. It's important to take regular breaks from staring at the monitor, so you feel refreshed and ready to get going again when you return.

Spring Clean

To be happy at work it is important to be organised. Cleaning the clutter and having a sort out of your desk will make you feel instantly happier. Throw away papers that you no longer need and file away the ones that you do. Take the notes scrawled across random pieces of paper and write on bright post-it notes, this will be a better reminder and look more aesthetically pleasing. That goes for your computer documents as well, take time to check you have all your documents in folders that are easy to find. Cleaning your screen regularly will avoid eyestrain and giving your desk a wipe will make your workspace feel clean and fresh. Novelty cleaning products such as a mini desk hoover, are sure to make you smile as you spring clean.
