It’s official: Curvy girls rock. And the AW16 fashion trends are a dream come true for those of us blessed with a fuller silhouette. This coming season’s top fashion steals are just waiting for curves to showcase them to their best. So what are you waiting for? Embrace the new with a little help from these perennial fashion mantras.
1. It’s All About the Base
Feeling fabulously suited and booted – all the way up from your bra and knickers – gives any fuller-figured girl a sense of sexy confidence. 'Beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes,' said the voluptuous Sophia Loren. Adding, 'It’s not something physical.' Decent underwear is an easy way to start oozing that sassy inner flair. Sophia never skimped on her undies.
2. Retro Rocks
Vintage retro dresses – especially fit and flare styles – are a curvy girl’s BFF. Think Christina Hendricks in Mad Men. If ever a curvy lady screamed sex siren, it’s her. Wrapping yourself in a tight top which then flares out under a belted middle accentuates that waist and will give you maximum va-va-voom. You’d be mad not to try it.
3. Don’t Worry – Be Happy
Corny though it sounds, beauty does indeed come from within. We know a fabulous dress can make us feel amazing, but feeling confident is in the mind, too. Who knows more about body confidence than Queen Latifah? 'I had to grow to love my body,' she says. 'Then everything kind of sprung from there. Things that I thought weren't attractive became sexy. Confidence makes you sexy.' This is one sassy lady who could work a sack on the catwalk. Time to embrace those assets.
4. Never Ever Apologise
Curvy women should never apologise for their shape – instead embrace and accentuate the bits you love. A signature pair of wide-fit killer heels or a fabulous handbag can be eye-catching and add to that wow factor.
5. Who Needs Rules?
Nothing screams confidence more than a girl who knows what she likes and how she can adapt it to flatter. Actress Drew Barrymore has spoken openly about battling her personal body image issues. But ripping up the rulebook and saying no choices were off limits gave her the freedom she relishes: 'Now I’m more comfortable in clothes than ever,' she says. AW16 styles see a nod to ’80s power dressing (shoulder pad, anyone?) with lush fabrics such as velvet dresses. Give them both a try.
6. Ditch the Baggy Look
Chic curvy women know baggy clothes aren’t flattering. Do a Nigella and if you find a figure-hugging dress, such as a wrap dress that skims your hips, embraces your bust and loves your curves, get it in lots of different colours and fabrics. A well-cut tailored jacket on a larger frame, or a well-cut pair of trousers, will showcase your style, your way, too.
7. Less Really Is More
It can be really tempting to over accessorise, in the hope that a pair of chandelier earrings, a chunky necklace, a scarf, a big belt and a corsage will give you the edge. But fashion-loving curvy girls know that less can sometimes be more. One key piece in an abstract or interesting print can look far more stunning and classy than numerous items hanging off your beautiful frame. Think daring trousers and a plain top, or an abstract pattern dress under a plain jacket.
8. Size Doesn’t Matter
Size is just a number, so if you don’t mind then it doesn’t matter. Remember, you, and indeed individual parts of your scrumptious anatomy, will fit different sizes in different shops. You may be two or three different sizes apart in various brands so visit our Curve Style hub for inspiration. Cherish your curves and embrace your shape. You have no idea how empowering (and sexy) that can be.
